Yet I believe that this book, “The Chocolate War” by Robert Cormier, should be kept in schools to be read by teenagers. Many people believe that this book should be banned for the fact that it talks about bullying and violence. In a couple parts of the story, Jerry is beaten up. There are also multiple parts where the Vigils or Janza bully a kid. But that isn’t so bad that we should ban it.
there is no solid proof that the media causes violence, and although parents do a lot to help and protect their children, there are still some steps that can be taken to protect their children against violent and sexual material. Government intervention not stands for it. Violence starts at home, not on TV or in a computer game. America needs to stand together and fight youth violence and promiscuous sex without taking away the rights of citizens. We all want to help America's youth, but Government intervention (stronger enforcement of existing laws or new legislation) into availability of popular culture media would not help to reduce violence and promiscuous sex among America's
Most of the citizen listen to the governments idea if equality because either they agree with the idea of absolute equality or because they fear the government and they don’t want to have to face the consequences of rebelling against the governments harsh and oppressive ideologies. Equality may be achieved in the most literal form of the word, but it is achieved at the cost of freedom. Freedom is no longer in their society because they do not have the freedom to think any more, a prime example would be the “mental handicap radio” (464) that is places in George’s ear in order to distract him from his own thoughts. In Harrison Bergeron the television is used in order to essentially brain wash the citizens and to instill fear into them as well. The importance of the television is seen through out the short story by having the entire narrative taking place with both the main characters, Hazel and George, being in front of the television the whole time.
The first and obvious reason is that the book takes place in a pro-communist setting. The book may have been trying to prove a point, but it was still enough to offend many. The book is also sexually explicit, so it is easy to see why parents may want to “protect” their children from the idea of sex and that it should not be thought of in the way George Orwell writes about it. The most interesting reason for the ban of 1984 was the fact that it reminded people of what is like in the United States today. It has made people uncomfortable to think that what is being described in this chilling novel reminds them of what they see outside their own windows, with the fact that humans are constantly on watch and there is practically no way to keep anything hidden.
Miller makes the reader really sit and think about the idea of capital punishment. I think in some way he is like these people but more in a contradicting way. It seems he is against the criminal executions. However, his main purpose is to inform people that criminal executions should be viewable to the public and everyone should have an option, if they wants to watch. He even states “My proposal would lead us more quickly to boredom and away from our current gratifying excitement – and ultimately perhaps to a wiser use of alternating current.
114). This type of literature can cause parents to have concern, because there is a lot of racist language involved in the book, and many parents may feel that this may teach their kids that it will be okay to use this type of language everyday. Since some parents may feel that way about the literature, they may want to object and maybe ban the book from the
Society may say that having a person’s limbs ripped off is cruel, but so is cyber bullying. The population would prefer a more non-violent approach to this issue such as, seminars to make parents teachers and children more aware. When it comes to handling bullying, America is all talk. The Americans say that we live in a nonviolent world, yet we promote this kind of violence by showing it in television shows and movies. Each state in America has different laws and punishments with cyber bullying; some states don’t even have laws for cyber bullying.
Popular Torture Viewer discretion is advised. In Anne-Marie Cusacs article “Watching Torture in Prime Time” she discloses the truth behind Fox Channel’s hit show “24” and it’s use of torture as method of entertainment. The media has become a huge part of our lives for a source of learning, entertainment and communication. Popular media needs to be limited to the context, since much of the information it is unreliable. Exposing violence in the media teaches bad morals and is not supported by the greater good of society.
