This is Mission San Luis Rey. The real name is Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. San Luis Rey de Francia is Spanish for Saint Louis, King of France. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was named after the French King Louis IX, who lived in the 1200’s. Louis IX led two crusades to spread catholic religion to other countries.

The five-bastion Fort was the symbol of the 5th Corps at Santiago during the war with Spain. The city was founded in 1781 by Felipe do Neve, a Spanish governor. The small pueblo, whose original title was “The Town of Our Lady, the Queen of the Angels of Porciuncula,” consisted of 44 settlers of mixed cultural backgrounds. Control of Los Angeles would shift hands quite often. It remained under Spanish rule until 1821, when it became a part of Mexico following the Mexican secession from Spain. The Mexican hold over the California region was brief, as it came under the control of the United States in 1848 at the end of the Mexican-American War.

On the upper left hand corner and lower right hand corner of the map are three distinct Coats of Arms. On top the two Coats of Arms are representative of the 1559 Treaty of Cateau Cambresis between Spain and France. The two Coats of Arms depict the relationship between Spain and France after the signing of the treaty that for all intensive purposes ended nearly thirty years of conflict in Western Europe between not only Spain and France, but also England. The image also shows the relationship between both Spain and France as a result of the marriage between King Philip II of Spain and Elizabeth of Valois, who was the daughter of King Henry II of France. The other Coat of Arms on the bottom of the map is that of the Portugal.
