This is Mission San Luis Rey. The real name is Mission San Luis Rey de Francia. San Luis Rey de Francia is Spanish for Saint Louis, King of France. Mission San Luis Rey de Francia was named after the French King Louis IX, who lived in the 1200’s. Louis IX led two crusades to spread catholic religion to other countries. Much like the California missions founding friars, Louis IX dedicated his life to spreading the catholic faith. Fray Peyri and Fray Faura began their mission with only 12 plowshares, 6 crowbars, some blankets, pickaxes, and cloth to make clothes for the neophytes. Food supplies and livestock were sent from nearby missions to help the friars get started. The friars encouraged the nearby Luisenos to work for the mission by giving them food and blankets in return for their labor. Upon their arrival, the Spanish missionaries and soldiers built temporary huts as quickly as they could. The Luiseno Indians who had been attracted to the founding ceremony also helped with the work. The temporary shelters were constructed mainly from sticks and mud, and were only meant to last until more permanent structures could be built. Roofs were made from sticks, mud, and thatch or tule, a strawlike
