At the start of the War, on May 4, 1861, New Jersey was instructed to have three infantry regiments to serve a three-year term by the US War Department. The state worked to spread word of the war to try to urge volunteers to come up and serve their state, and on May 21, the First New Jersey Volunteer Infantry was added to the Union Army at Camp Olden in Trenton. After the second and third regiments had been officially created, many more were added along the way and New Jersey soldiers eventually totaled up to 52 regiments during the War.
