INTRODUCTION TO TOPIC “Things Fall Apart” by Chinua Achebe is all about tragedy and it follows a lot of classic stories but it is also about the struggle and drastic change which occurred in Umuofia village, which the main character happens to be Okonkwo who is a leader, a well respected strong man, and a wrestling champion in Umuofia. The book focuses on Okonkwo’s family and personal history,the custom and society of the Ibo and the influence of the British colonialism, and Christian missionaries in the community. Okonkwo was a man who focused on not being like his father but on the contrary he was as weak as his father. His focus on his father’s character for him not to be like him actually made him weak, to his own selfish ideas as to what a man should be or do or what he should not do. Okonkwo had a horrible temper and this caused him to be very violent. He depicted these actions by beating his family in effort to control them, he believed his first son Nwonye was like his father therefore, he beat him often in attempt to make him more manly. He also beat up his second wife because he came back from outside and his afternoon meal had not yet been prepared, disregarding the fact that it was a peace week and every family was supposed to be peaceful. He made poor decisions by participating in the killing of the boy Ikemefuna who lived with him and called him father, after he had been warned not to participate in his killing. The continuous disagreement between Okonkwo and the new religion, people, and values adopted by his society results in his life falling apart and suicide, at the end of the book. MAIN IDEA: THESIS STATEMENT The main idea of the book was the white man coming to Africa to destroy the culture because African tradition and Western European cannot easily coexist without conflicting, there was a vast different between the two.
