Throughout this essay, James Baldwin continued make references to life and death, blacks and whites, and love and hate. In the beginning of the essay, the writer described the relationships between he and his father. His father did not trust anyone because of his bitter past that hunted him. His father is portrayed as a skeptical as he could not open and trust anyone especially white people. This made the reader wondering about what white people did to Baldwin’s father until he hated all white people.
Okonkwo and Macbeth are both heavily influenced by other characters, fuelled by the expectations of their societies, and driven to act based on their tragic flaw. The reason behind all the actions Okonkwo takes can be traced back to one person; his father. Okonkwo grew up hating Unoka’s laziness and he “was ruled by one passion- to hate everything that his father Unoka had loved” (Achebe 13). This led him to rule “his household with a heavy hand” (Achebe 13), and treat his family poorly. He is afraid to show affection, as seen with Ezinma and Ikemefuna.

I’m going to beat some industry into you if I have to kill you to do it.”’ (Gould, 3) David’s earlier years have been hard, resulting him being unpopular, and being unsatisfied. David begins to feel sick and tired of the abuse from his father and decides to run away from home. David starts to develop hatred towards his father, wanting to hurt and give him the pain he has felt over the years.
When Richard and Harrison agree to fight themselves for money they end up humiliating themselves. For the two men are unable to fake a fight and are thus forced to actually injure one another due in part to the fear that the white viewers invoke on them. This fight in the end deeply ashamed Richard for it got him to realize that violence infects the black community in general, whether from within or from the white community’s imposed violence. When Richard grows up he moves to Chicago and joins the Communist movement. However he learns quickly that the police beat protesting Communists and Richard is forced to move from one outcast group to another, never truly escaping reality.
“He heard Ikemefuna cry, ’My father, they have to kill me!’ as he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down” (Achebe 61). Okonkwo kills his son, because he is afraid of being seen as weak. To the villages he is perceived as brave and ruthless. But what the villagers do not know is that he never wanted to kills his son.

Things Fall Apart is written to follow the life of Okonkwo and his fall from greatness in his community. He has 3 wives, many crops, and is a strong warrior, all traits of a typical wealthy man in the Ibo Tribe. Okonwko’s main goal in life is to not gain the characteristics of his father, who was weak and considered a failure to those around him. He lives in a society where men rule, and it is hard for him to show love or affection towards his family.

The novel When Thins s Fall Apart, written by Chinua Achebe begins as a story about the life of a man named Okonkwo. It tells a story beginning from his childhood and ending with his death. As a child he struggled to be different from his father, who was considered a failure. Although his father was looked upon as a failure in society, in the eyes of the tribe, and by his own son, he contained something that Okonkwo never had: humility and happiness in the smallest things.
He recounts the details of the torture his father had to endure. While Being interrogated his father showed resolve by not giving up his riches, and eventually dying with integrity.

He went against his customs and abused his army, allowing his soldiers little time to rest and craving more and more power through his reign. While his people expected him to show kindness , he grew harder and harsher which eventually led to his own army and brother killing him.
This is important in the novel because when Okonkwo interferes with the Christians’ way of life at the end of the novel his “wing breaks”(he dies).
