The critics of video games demanded that stricter controls such as American gun control the media then swept up the story and labelled video games “murder simulators”. But time has shown us that the individuals in this massacre, and in other incidents of shooting sprees, the purpatrators were wither victims of abuse at the hands of adults, were mentally disturbed or were the victims of extensive alienation and abuse at the hands of their peers. I believe that these events could have been avoided with intervention from the school or the family who should have seen the degeneration in the persons attitudes. Critics claim that violence breeds violence. So why is it only video games that take the blame.
With the simple click of a remote control, children can virtually get involved in violent acts of shooting and killing. All of the violence in the media can have a negative effect on children, and impact them in many different ways. An example of violence in the media can be seen in video games. Video games were first introduced to us in the 1970s as a source of entertainment, but have taken a turn for the worse in recent years. "Today, most children play real-time, first-person shooter games in which the player views the world through the eyes of the video game character that they control" (Signorelli 2).
More and more people, especially adolescents, play violent video games. Is exposure to violent video games positive or negative to adolescents? The answer is obvious on the basis of the following example: two kids wound their classmates by shooting when imitating the scene in a violent video game called Doom (Shin). Violent video games have negative effects on adolescent players. The first negative effect caused by exposure to violent video games is an increase in aggressive behavior of adolescents.
Into this world with these characteristics built genetically in us? When it comes to Psychopaths and their crazy tendencies, they are affected by society to make them who they are. Since a very young age, when humans are still developing and are not considered mature yet, people around them and what they interact with drastically changes their behavior. For example, Ted Bundy, a well-known murderer and rapist who approximately killed 30 women in his life, has admitted on an interview before he was killed that his childhood may have had an effect to him. “He said that the ‘hard-core’ pornography that he was exposed to could take responsibility for the murders.
Can Movies Kill The ability to identify logical fallacies in the arguments of others and to avoid them in our own arguments is valuable and rare. Some logical fallacies are more common than others. The fallacies Post Hoc Ergo Propter Hoc, Hasty Generalization, and Causal Oversimplification are all errors of reasoning. In the article Natural Born Killers by John Grisham, Sarah Edmondson and her boyfriend Benjamin Darras commit a murder and severely injure another. The two want to say they did such horrible things because of a movie they had seen, Natural Born Killers.
The discussion about violence in films is usually had in the media and often occurs after there has been an extreme violent act, particularly by a young person or a controversially violent film just released. Media often looks for links between violent acts and causes and if they find a link that shows that a person who has been very violent watched violent films then they will make a connection based on that situation. An example of this is Kick Ass 2 where after a gun massacre by a young man on a school one of the main stars of the film Jim Carrey distanced himself from the film in reaction to the attack and the film was criticised for being too violent, aimed at young people and a bad influence. The executive producer of the film responded by saying ‘I’ve never quite bought the notion that violence in fiction leads to violence in real-life any more than Harry Potter casting a spell creates more Boy Wizards in real life’. Kick-Ass 2 is a follow up movie of an ultra-violent comic book and sees Chloe Moretz and Aaron Taylor-Johnson have roles as high school pupils turned DIY superheroes Hit Girl and Kick-Ass.
Do Video Games Cause Violence? Video games have always had a bad reputation. Most of the bad effects blamed on video games are due to violence. It is thought that people who play violent video games are more likely to show increased aggression. Video games have been blamed for school shootings, bullying, and violence towards women.
A counselor knows that the home life and parenting skills factor into how a kid acts when and while the kid is growing up. Most of the school shooters have had mental problems, like Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold in the Columbine Shooting. People think that all gamers will eventually commit random violence; therefore, people are blaming video games for the violence, when it is a deeper psychological problem. There are many different arguments that exist against video games and violence. One of those arguments is aggressive behavior.
And with unstable adolescents and teens playing these types of games, violent behavior is found to be more likely and could have possibly caused the murders at Columbine High School where Eric and Dylan attended. Dylan and Eric played the video game "Postal" constantly; Postal is a first-person shooter game that requires a lot of killing in order to advance to the next level. At the end, the gamer has to instruct the game character to kill itself in order to finish (40). This was the reason people believed Klebold and Harris decided to take their own lives. Leo spoke with a psychologist by the name David Grossman of Arkansas State University to support his claim.
This film depicts how media can have an affect on ones reality perception, and how much of a strange anxiety one gets from technology. Sconce theory states “How cultural anxiety over media technology elicits both aggression and fear”. In the film “The Hunger Games” the capitol made kids kill each other as a game and television show. These kids sit and wait for a siren to sound; knowing that this is now a life or death situation, the kids now have to prepare for the worst and so does their parents. They fear for their lives but they don’t have any other choices.
