Thematic Essay The book Big Fish by Daniel Wallace gives off many different messages. The message a book tells is known as a theme. The most noticeable themes in Big Fish are to never give up, it’s hard to leave a good place like home when you don’t know where you are going, and laughing is the answer. These themes show up throughout the whole book and they each teach you a valuable lesson. Keep your head up no matter what the circumstances. Try, try, try again. Practice makes perfect. All these phrases come back to the saying never give up. Edward Bloom never gave up. All through the whole book he pushed forward. In all of his stories, not one time did he show a sign of defeat. During the story “His Three Labors”, Edward completed three demanding, strenuous, jobs. During the second labor, Edward worked as a sales clerk at a store with all female workers. An old lady by the name of Muriel Rainwater came in to search for the latest girdles once a month. She never asked for Edwards’s assistance and basically ignored him every time she came in. This made her, as Edward puts it, “… the most desirable customer in the store.” (93) He immediately took this as a challenge. “He made it his goal to one day wait on Muriel Rainwater.” (93) The next month, Edward devised a plan and successfully assisted Muriel Rainwater in finding the perfect girdle. Edward never gave up and showed only confidence. When a challenge arose, he boldly approached it with a straight back and positive attitude. This theme, like all themes, is one we should live by every day. Never giving up will get you through the tough patches of life. Home is the most peaceful, memorable, place someone can be. Leaving home can be a tough, frightening, experience. Just leaving a place special to you can be difficult and painful, especially when you don’t know where you’re going. Edward did this multiple times
