2.2 The sandpaper numerals Material Numerals from 1 to 10, cut out of sandpaper and mounted on separate green cards. Preparation The numerals 1 to 10 are introduced in stages, with 3 cards at one time, for e.g. for the first time, the teacher will introduce 1, 2, 3 and for the second time, 3, 4, 5 and so on. Trace the number in the way that you wish the child to write them. Be precise. Presentation 1. Teacher invites the child, “Mary, today we are going to work with the sand paper numerals. Would you like to lay the mat and follow me to the basin to sensitize your hands with warm water?” 2. Teacher shows the child where the materials are placed and how to carry the materials to the mat. 3. Teacher seats on the child’s dominant hand. 4. Teacher introduces the materials to the child. 5. Teacher tells the child, “Today we are going to work with sandpaper numerals.” 6. Teacher takes the first 3 sandpaper numerals (put the rest face down aside, so as to not distract the child) and says ' this is how we write the numbers". 7. Teacher takes out 1, traces it three times and says its name “one”. 8. Give to the child to repeat. Place the board at the top of the mat. 9. Repeat for numbers 2 and 3. 10. She then uses the "Three Period Lesson" to teach both the name and the shape of the numerals 1 to 3. The First Period: 11. Teacher takes '1', places it in front of the child, traces the shape of the numeral in the direction it is written with two fingers and says, "This is 1." 12. Teacher then asks the child to feel and trace the numerals with her fingers and the teacher will say ‘This is 1.” Teacher encourages the child to repeat after her by saying. “Would you like to say 1?" 13.
