Obesity is a growing outbreak in America that effects all ages and gender. As we grow, our metabolism slows, which makes it harder for us to burn calories (obesityfocused.com). What we call obesity today is becoming or has become a problem in America. I love food, you love food, they love food, we all love food. I look at it as an addiction for most and a disease for some.
In “Discrimination at Large” Jennifer A. Coleman explains that obesity is the last preserve for unexplained bigotry. She tells us how overweight people are publicly criticized without remorse on TV, in the news and in cartoons. Coleman goes on to say people who would never think about telling an anti-gay or racial joke have no problem screaming “move your fat ass” when we cross in front of them. Furthermore, she tells us that overweight children are taught that they deserve to be mocked. I found this article to be very eye opening for me and how I deal with the subject of obesity around my children.

An estimated 8 million Americans currently suffer from eating disorders. The media has glamorized extremely thin women resulting in many young girls feeling inferior. A study published in the Journal of Communication found that high school girls as young as thirteen are affected by the media’s portrayal of ultra-thin models and celebrities.
The oldest of the two, Britney, is fairly overweight, practically “borderline diabetic”. She is obese because she likes to eat, and as I said before in a small town with poor knowledge of nutrition, Britney likes to eat out because everything is very convenient to her. This is only half the problem as to why Americans are the way they are with their diet. Coming from a female’s point of view of why more than half of women in America are obese, the article “Fat is Feminist Issue” by Susie Orbach, explains the fact that society today show up and have certain images of what a lady should look like. They portray women as a huge sex object because sex sells.
Overweight people face discrimination in 3 major areas of life: education, employment, and health care. Neumark-Sztainer interviewed overweight girls and the girls all reported hurtful indirect and direct comments and being rejected or treated differently due to their weight. They found that girls perceived the teasing to be more stressful. In a study of 88 obese adolescents, 50% of boys and 58.3% of girls had significant problems with peers. Obese groups also scored lower in the physical and general self-esteem scales than the control group.
Obesity has recently become more common than ever before. It is said that Americans are becoming the most overweight people in the world. Every gender and every race of Americans contribute to this rising problem. Obesity is becoming more common amongst children as well as young adults. Newly created technology prevents a lot of people from wanting to leave their homes because everything is so readily available there.
The teenagers health is at risk, therefore there is an increased chance that the teenager will face medical issues short or/and long term. Everything occurs for a reason and therefore there is reasoning behind obesity and weight gain. Every female is not born overweight and there is reasoning why the numbers of overweight teenagers are increasing. “The Big Issue” provides reasoning in a simplified layout and language hence teenage girls can relate. The article explains that teenagers are definitely eating more, as food is available most of the time.
If someone is obese and their family suffers of obesity as well, it is going to be obvious that you got it from your family through genes and because of lack of exercise or poor diet. Cases like this currently are considered rare in United States of America. Another factor that contributes to obesity in some cases is pregnancy. Women can become obese because of pregnancy. During pregnancy, women gain lots of weight.

According to national obesity trends, more than one third of adult Americans are considered obese, and the rise continues at a steady incline. Even after all the P90X commercials and Jenny Craig diets, Americans still fall victim to the double quarter pounder with cheese. Sadly, with a supersized meal comes a supersized health problem, and society is feeling its burden through diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular disorders. Weight gain has become a prominent enough that, we now face a nationwide crisis that kills up to 400,000 citizens a year, and raises medical costs into the hundred billions.
