Obesity Obesity has become one of the major issues in the United States of America. Obesity is body weight that exceeds the amount of weight considered healthy. The United States of America is a country that is known for its obesity rates. The United States of America is the country with the highest obesity rate with 30.6 percent. The main cause of obesity in this country is the business of fast food because it’s very cheap and very unhealthy. It’s been proven that fast food can make you obese in the documentary “Super Size Me” by Morgan Spurlock. In 1991 four states reported a prevalence rate of obesity greater than 15 percent, and no states reported prevalence greater than 20 percent. Rates of overweight and at-risk for overweight are increasing among children between 6 and 19 years of age, with 16.3 percent currently overweight and 32 percent at risk for overweight(The CDC does not apply the term obese to children). The trend is particularly worrisome because an elementary school child who is overweight has 80 percent probability of being overweight at age 12; a person who is obese at age 18 faces chances 28 to 1 against maintaining a healthy adult weight. Childhood obesity can include very destructive effects on the body. Obese children have a high probability of having high blood pressure and high cholesterol, which are risk factors for cardiovascular illness. If someone is obese and their family suffers of obesity as well, it is going to be obvious that you got it from your family through genes and because of lack of exercise or poor diet. Cases like this currently are considered rare in United States of America. Another factor that contributes to obesity in some cases is pregnancy. Women can become obese because of pregnancy. During pregnancy, women gain lots of weight. They gain weight because they eat a lot so the baby could be healthy, and also because pregnancy makes women eat more than usual.
