A Guide to The Peace Corps: the Ins and Outs of The Corps Growing up, I played for countless hours in my backyard. Soccer, tag, and hide-and-go-seek were the usual games, but sometimes I would entertain myself by chasing the rabbits and squirrels that shared the backyard with me. I would sneak up on them as quietly as a seven-year-old could and try to catch them. It never happened of course, and the little critters would usually scamper under the chain link fence at the back of the yard and into the woods beyond. As a child, I always wondered what was on the other side of the fence. If I were to ever get over the fence what fun, strange things would I find? government, the Corps receives roughly a three million dollar annual budget to run itself, while there are approximately 6-10,000 volunteers at any given time in seventy-three countries on six different continents (E. Grabianowski, 2007). To me, the number of volunteers seems rather low considering the population of United States is 315 million. When you think about it, how can there only be a few thousand people who want to be Corps Volunteers out of the entire U.S. population? In reality there are thousands more who want to be volunteers, but the application and selection processes to become a volunteer are so rigorous that only a few thousand, government hand-picked individuals make the cut. They are the kind of people who love to travel the world as well as have a passion for helping others. Two very important qualities needed to be successful in the Corps. As a couple, the Corps placed both in Ethiopia. In the Corps, Josh is working in land surveying as well as mapping the spread of certain diseases, such as HIV ad AIDS. Jen is working with medicine and teaching the locals about various new modern medicine techniques.
