Mason Renner Sheka College Writing 1/6/12 The Parking Predicament There was a day when Linn-Mar High School had one average sized parking lot, one exit, and too many parking problems to count. Recently, there have been three more lots added, along with three new exits. Now that the days of a crowded south lot are over, some of these parking rules and how they are enforced seem highly vestigial. There are many students who feel that the ticketing system is overdue for change. Currently, you can be given a ticket for not parking in your designated lot, having no tag hanging in your windshield, parking illegally, and violating a ban from the lot. Students often comment on how there should not be a requirement for a parking tag as long as your car is registered to park with the school. Others comment that there should not be separate parking lots for faculty and students. They believe that it would be just as convenient for teachers to park close to their classroom as it is for students to park to theirs. An English teacher at Linn-Mar commented on these rules, saying that she was ticketed for parking in the south lot because it was more convenient for her instead of the designated faculty lot. For students who chose to keep their car at home, they may be unable to shuttle siblings to and from school in the mornings, and throw off their weekly schedule. Students who choose to park off campus face a long walk to school and must budget more time in the mornings and find an acceptable spot to park on 9th street. Many people continue to park on campus, because the supervisors will often not notice. But, those who continue to park on campus face the daily anxiety that they will be suspended from the campus for even longer because of violating their ban from the lot. Often they are not caught, because the enforcers of the bans do not mind cars unless they are breaking rules or don’t have their tag. But if they were caught, the third time offender would be subjected to a 10 day suspension and paid further attention to by enforcers. The 4th time offender would then be referred to the administration by enforcers to do with them as they see
