Almost hundred years back, in 1916, Maria Montessori wrote in The Secret of Childhood, p. 21. “The child …has come from a place where it was shielded from light and sound…it also has need of silence and darkness. It has grown in a place where it was protected from all assaults, from every change of temperature, in a fluid created for its rest. And in an instant it has changed this dark and silent home…” However, science is discovering more and more each day about the impact of the environment on unborn child. In this essay, I will show some of what we can learn from this research. An environment is what surrounds a thing or an item. It could be physical elements – the physical environment, which includes the built surroundings and the natural environment - air conditions, water, land, atmosphere, etc., or it could be human elements. This is also known as the social environment and includes elements such as the spiritual environment, emotional environment, home, family etc. The environment is a fluid, dynamic thing. It does not ‘exist’, it 'becomes'. A fe tus (sometimes spelled foetus or fœtus) describes an individual in the period which lies between the developing stage and birth. In humans, the fetal stage of prenatal development starts at the beginning of the 11th week in gestational age, which is the 9th week after fertilization. The impact of negative, positive, good, bad, healthy and unhealthy environment on every living thing and human life is a proven reality. Long before a child is born, there is development of life in the womb. Healthy babies are often taken for granted. People forget about the long nine months in the formation of a baby.
