Tony Johnson Ms. Sinclair English 1 13 August 2011 The House on Mango Street 1. Most stories you have read in school contain a beginning, middle, and an end. The House on Mango Street, however, contains character sketches and vignettes that are not linear. Choose three vignettes from the book and explain how the stories affect your thinking or move you emotionally. Sally- The vignette entitled Sally stuck out the most to me out of any in the entire book. I could relate and understand this one the most the first time reading it. It is the reason why I like this book. At the part where they talk about her changing directly after school and becoming a different sally so she can go home affected my thinking because it is much like my life in the sense that around your parents sometimes acting the same way as you would around your friends at school is not a good idea. Also I get the feeling Sally is trying to be cool at school and standout since she knows she has to fall in line at home and is not allowed to be individual. The way she dislikes going home to her house on Mango Street is often the way I feel coming home from my dad’s house. The part where it talks about her wanting to run away from Mango Street to a beautiful house is how I feel some days. Some days I feel like just walking out of the house too or not going home at all after summer vacations at my dad’s. My Name- The vignette My Name was another part of the story that I could identify and find similarities with. Like Esperanza I have a unique name as well. My middle name is Za’id which means happy in Arabic which is the opposite of what Esperanza means in Spanish. That middle name was given to me because my parents did not want me to be a Jr. and because my mom wanted me to be ‘happy’ I suppose. People often times pronounce it incorrectly which irritates me just a little but
