The Five Component of Fitness Physical fitness is a set of attributes that people can have or achieve that relates to the ability to perform physical activity. Being fit does not depend on how someone looks or how much they can lift, but is based on five components. The five components to fitness are cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, body composition and flexibility. Each of these components are important to a person’s overall health. Cardiorespiratory endurance is how efficient your heart and lungs are at delivering oxygen to your body and how efficient your body is at creating the energy your muscles need in order to work. Cardiorespiratory workouts are activities that elevate a person’s heart, and this is important, because as a person participates in these kind of workouts, their heart strengthens, making it so they are able to pump more blood throughout their body, and more energy is released making daily and other activities easier to do. Muscular strength is used to complete everyday tasks. Muscular strength is the amount of force muscles are able to exert in a short period of time. Strength is needed for the body to function, without it the brain will tell the body it is unable to complete the task at hand. For a balanced fitness program, strength training is essential. Muscular strength is important because it can slow the muscle loss that comes with age, build the strength of your muscles and connective tissues, increase bone density, cut your risk of injury, and help ease arthritis pain. If muscular strength is not exercised the muscles will slow and weaken, and accidents will happen that could have been prevented.
