To the winner all, and the loser, humiliation. When the Allies handed the peace down at Versailles, they felt that they were ensuring an end to war. The harsh treatment of Versailles through a need for security, and a desire for revenge merely reset the iron dice for the next player. Woodrow Wilson was an idealist before his time and one that only America
Some may argue that no one wanted war. Winston Churchill stated that the Great Powers slid over the brink into a war nobody wanted. (Doc I). Russia and France were forced into war because Germany declared war on Russia 1 August 1914 and war on France 3 August 1914. Therefore, it may be true that countries that did not want war were forced into it, however, “nobody” is inaccurate due to the fact that Germany wanted war.
Both soldiers and civilians blame the defeats in the war and the growing crises on the home front on Tsar. Even the Tsars only army stated it wouldn’t support him if a revolution occurred. Explain the importance/significance of World War 1 to the downfall of the Tsar WWI was a very significant event on the rule of Tsar Nicholas 11. Although it initially bolstered his position, it then became a large factor that contributed to Nicholas’ downfall. The Country was ecstatic when the Tsar made the announcement that Russia was going to fight against Germany in WWI.
Wilson believed the treaty of Versailles should punish Germany but not so harshly that it would someday recover and seek revenge. However Wilson’s main aims were portrayed> through his fourteen points. But perhaps his main goal for post war Europe was to strengthen democracy in Germany so the citizens would not let its leaders cause another war. France suffered enormous damage in WW1. When the war ended the general population of France wanted revenge on Germany.
They are many factors on why did Hitler became Chancellor of Germany in January 1933. World War one, treaty of Versailles, fear of communist and the great depression are the main reason on Hitler became Chancellor. The Germans sighted the treaty of Versailles 1919 after losing Great War, although they believed they treaty was harsh they had no choice either sign it or the country getting invaded. The Germans called the treaty Diktat as it was being forced on them and the Germans had no choice but to sign it. One thing the Germans were not happy in the treaty of Versailles is the War Guilt Clause, take blame for the war.
The League also didn’t work because America didn’t join and it was the American President Woodrow Wilson who created it and it would never have worked unless all the nations were allowed to join. The failure of this organisation encouraged Hitler because he had witnessed how weak and inefficient it was. The Abyssinia Crisis is a good example of how the League
Germany had been expecting a treaty based on Wilson's 14 points and were not happy with the terms of the Treaty of Versailles. However, they had no choice but to sign the document. The main terms of the Treaty of Versailles were: 1. War Guilt Clause - Germany should accept the blame for starting World War One 2. Reparations - Germany had to pay £6,600 million for the damage caused by the war 3.
The three powers did not consult with Benes and the Czechs, nor with Russia. This made once again increased tension. Hitler had again achieved his aim by threatening force. Although Chamberlain declared that the appeasement meant ‘peace in our time’, he had at the same time authorized a great increase in arms spending. Hitler’s policies had led to a renewed arms race in Europe.
However, Madison did not sign the bill into law because he believed that it wasn’t constitutional even though it would desperately help the United States. Federalists believed that the Constitution was open to interpretation and used the Elastic Clause to support their beliefs (Doc D). During one of the numerous wars between the British and the French the federal government imposed the Embargo Act (Doc E) to cease the trade between both countries to show America’s neutrality. This act harmed the United States more than helped because in New England, which contained mainly federalists, there main way of life was through trading with Europe so they had an economic down turn for as long as the war was going on. During the War of 1812, the Federalists held the Hartford Convention (Doc E) because they were against the war because they were again struggling to trade with Europe.
Ernst Roehm had a different view of a successful Germany and Hitler was on different path (A3). Apparently Roehm and Hitler have butted heads before and Hitler came on top (A3). Hitler was growing very afraid of the Brownshirts, so he felt the only way to keep power was to put the S.A on leave. Hitler was thinking that another revolution could have happened with the S.A in power (D2). Hitler paid attention to what happened with Russia and was able to not make the same mistake.
