Blog Entry 2 Amy West Honors English III Mr. Cutler 9/26/13 In the story “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller, several young girls and women have been accused of performing witchcraft. This story is based on real events that have happened in history. Young Abigail Williams has been through a lot in her life, and although it is never tells in the story, the audience can infer that she tends to lie and can be deceiving. The people of the town make her out to be an angel sent from God, but she isn’t at all what she seems. From the beginning of the story, witchcraft is the main thing that is happening. Parris, Abigail’s uncle, had spotted her and a few other girls of the town in the woods dancing, and performing witchcraft. After they had been spotted, Abigail’s cousin Betty apparently fainted “We did dance, uncle, and when you leaped out of the bush so suddenly, Betty was frightened and then she fainted. And there’s the whole of it.” (pg. 1262) She had been passed out for a while but they could not figure out why she would not wake up. Abby told her uncle…show more content…
They were all considering just confessing and taking their consequences but not Abby. “Now look you. All of you. We danced. And Tituba conjured Ruth Putnam’s dead sisters. And that is all. And mark this. Let either of you breathe a word, or the edge of a word, about the other things, and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and I will bring a pointy reckoning that will shudder you.” (pg. 1268) All along Abby denied having anything to do with witchcraft to the adults but, during the trials the rest of the town and the audience soon comes to figure out she has been lying to protect herself. During the trials, Abby all of a sudden looks up and begins screaming. She and the other girls claim to see a yellow bird. Abby talks as if it wants to attack her and she starts to call it Mary.
