This conveys to the audience how disrespectful and dishonourable Abigail is by threatening a court member -who is much respected in the community and has power over Abigail- with a lie, at the age of seventeen, when there are people’s lives on the line and when she has been the one doing wrong doing throughout the whole play. However she still has the nerve to get up in front of a court and continue to threaten and manipulate people into doing what she wants for her benefit. This makes the audience feel infuriated with Abigail for even after all she has done, all the lives that have been lost because of her, she still sees fit to threaten and manipulate. It also however makes the audience feel quite amused, that she is so childish that she has to resort to such empty threats to get her way. Miller uses this stage direction to highlight how blatant Abigail is and how she will do anything to protect herself and get her own
Moreover, when Reverend Parris confronts Abigail about being fired by Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail denies any wrongdoings. She accuses Elizabeth as “a lying, cold, sniveling women” who spreads rumor about to degrade her social status. Abigail’s motivation in the witchcraft is thus revealed, which is jealousy towards Elizabeth. As Abigail successfully frames other people for being responsible about the witchcraft, she further imposes her domination over the other girls. Her domination is demonstrated physically and verbally.
Throughout The White Devil, Webster presents his leading female character Vittoria as elusive, Vittoria’s absence from the stage for much of the play and often present on stage only due to the fact that she is continuously accused of being a ‘whore’. During scene one Vittoria speaks only two short lines and then exists the scene and is not heard of until her court trail scene. She is often used to create dramatic situations even during her trail scene, where whatever she speaks is re-told even when she recalls a dream she has had, Bracciano boldly states ‘sweetly shall I interpret your dream’. Portraying the fact that she is unable to interpret her own dream, implying that she is incapable compared to the male characters. During her trail scene, she is accused of being a whore and it is at this point in the play that she gains a voice.
Analytical Essay on the individual living in Salem in The Crucible Being a part of the Salem community was something dangerous because no matter what you did, you were bound to be accused of witchcraft. In The Crucible, it starts out with Tituba being accused, Reverend Parris’ slave, because of her coming from Barbados, being of low social status in the town, and because the girls needed someone to blame it on. Tituba was then being whipped, so she needed to accuse someone else. In this case she was accusing out of fear for her life; she then accuses Sarah Good and Sarah Osborne. These two women were two poor women of low social status and here they are being accused.
The fear of getting punishment for the dancing that occurred in the woods was what prompted the girls to start accusing innocent people of witchery. The heart of this conflict that is driven by pure fear shows how the girls transform and go against their religious backgrounds to fuel these false accusations to save themselves from being punished and therefore creating the upsurge of conflicts in the town Salem. Abigail starts these false accusations by exaggerating the truth and putting the blame on Tituba "Sometimes I wake and find myself standing in the open doorway and not a stitch on my body! I always hear her laughing in my sleep. I hear her singing her Barbados songs and tempting me with-".
Cinthia Lorenzo Mr. Ridings English 1302 13 February 2015 “The Yellow Wallpaper” as a guide to the Injustice of a Women Throughout many centuries women have been fighting for a voice in society. Unfortunately for Charlotte Perkins Gilman, writer of “The Yellow Wallpaper,” women had a limited amount of saying on what was right and wrong. During this Victorian time, men were the strongest and women depended on the men. Gilman expresses the lack of women’s voice during her century by demonstrating the act of women oppression and symbolism to express her message in the story. Initially, Gilman demonstrated the lack of freedom the protagonist has with her husband.
Gilman’s essay shows that not all women were content staying in their set domain of domesticity, and she uses both the narrator and the image of the woman in the wallpaper to represent all women who desire to break free from their set domain. By leaving the narrator nameless, Gilman shows the limits society puts on where women can find their identity, but more importantly allows the reader to place themselves in the narrator’s position. With that, the process of the narrator’s going insane is more relevant, and boldly demonstrates why women need to permeate through the walls that have closed them off from the world. “The Yellow Wallpaper” directly addresses movements such as domestic ideology, causing readers to realize the wrongfulness in limiting the basis of a woman’s identity to her domestic
Who weeps for these, weeps for corruption.” says Danforth to the crowd because John Proctor was standing up to him and he ripped up he confession and speaking of the truth. The vindictive trait that is present in McCarthy, who distorted evidence and manipulated people. An example of a person who was innocently accused is Rebecca Nurse from “The Crucible” who represents Lillian Hellmann. Rebecca was as woman with up holding morals, which is evident when she refused to confess the names of other “witches”. She does not want to get caught in a web of lies.
