Not only does she deny doing witchcraft, she also manages to accuse Tituba of having full responsibility while she is the one who starts the whole thing. At the end of the chapter, she also frames some other citizens, saying that she sees them with the Devil. Her affair with John Proctor is furthermore exposed to the audience. Betty, Reverend Parris’s daughter, reveals that Abigail attempts to drink blood as a charm in order to kill Elizabeth Proctor, who is John Proctor’s wife. Moreover, when Reverend Parris confronts Abigail about being fired by Elizabeth Proctor, Abigail denies any wrongdoings.
Proctor tries to prevent Elizabeth from being hanged. He also admits that he lusted with Abigail. Elizabeth lies to the court, telling the first lie she has ever told. She lied to save her husband though. Abigail is accusing everyone of witchcraft to clear her name.
Abigail and Elizabeth stand out the most because of their role in the witch trails. Abigail Williams is the niece of Reverend Parris. She once was the servant for the Proctors but was fired by Elizabeth because she discovered that Abigail was having an affair with her husband, John Proctor. Abigail is a smart, wily, good liar, and vindictive when crossed. She is clearly the Villain of the play because she manipulated her friends and lied to the whole town.
John denies Abigail saying that it will never happen because he loves his wife. Their relationship isn’t the strongest but love is there. This so called love drives Abigail to accuse Johns wife of witchcraft so that she is to be hanged for committing sins against the bible. She thinks that killing Johns wife would make him love her even though John has told her otherwise so many times already. Her actions actually hurt John greatly throughout the story.
But when Mrs. Proctor began to suspect her of messing around with her husband, she threw Abigail out. But Abigail was already in love with John and so began to accuse people of having dealings with the Devil after her younger cousin, Betty became ill. The events and accusations snowballed until finally, Abigail pressured Mary Warren to accuse John Proctor of witchcraft. Those that were accused of witchcraft were then hung, burned at the stake or died in jail while waiting for execution. Joseph McCarthy was a government official who in the 1950’s began what is now called The Red Scare.
Next, she is in denial she still believes that john proctor still loves her that he still cares for her. She says this in a creepy tone, “You loved me John Proctor, and whatever sin it, you love me yet” (146). Her morals are all confused not caring for the sins that she has committed is the exact opposite of hoe they raised their children something is just wrong. Lastly, she is willing to kill anybody who stands between her especially Goody Proctor, John Proctors wife; also the other girls that she leads in a messed up cult. She says this as if she were the reaper herself, “let either of you breathe a word, or an edge of a word, about the other things and I will come to you in the black of some terrible night and pierce you” (144).
Powerless to do anything, Abigail resented Elizabeth for that and her jealousy grew. After the dancing in the forest incident, realizing how people listened and believed in her stories, she abuses that power. She manipulated the entire town and even her friends. She tells lies about them, accusing them of witch craft. She took revenge on Elizabeth and accuses her of being a witch.
He has commited adultery and this hidden secret unfolds into a mass of accusations, confessions, and madness in Salem. After the affair that John Proctor and Abigail had together, Abigail becomes jealous of John Proctor's wife. She tells him that once Elizabeth is out of their way, they would be free to love each other. John is appalled at this. John makes clear, "Abby, you'll put it out of mind.
This is when the doctor diagnosed them with malicious witchcraft (The Lesson of Trials).” This is when the girls started freaking out and blaming the other girls that were dancing with them. Then Tituba was blamed and she admitted to being a witch. Zealous ministers argued about the witchcraft proving that New England is a holy place, since the devil cared so much in it. The ministers requested that all witches be removed from
She gets revenge on Elizabeth Proctor because she is fired by the Proctor's and is in love with John, Elizabeth's husband. She is jealous of Elizabeth because she had an affair with John but he chooses his wife over Abigail. Abigail proves she is still in love with John by the jealousy she portrays when she says”Oh, I marvel how such a strong man may let much a sickly wife... She is a cold, sniveling women, and you bend to her!”(pg 23& 24). In order for her to get John she needs to get rid of Elizabeth. She does this by accusing her of witchcraft and claiming that “the familiar spirit of Elizabeth Procter stabbed her with a needle” (2, 24-25).
