In Arthur Millers play The Crucible, Abigail Williams and Elizabeth Proctor are two very different characters. Abigail being a selfish and heartless girl, Elizabeth is a kind and honest woman. Abigail used her own personal grudge against Elizabeth motive for accusing her of witchcraft. Their hatred had been long standing, mainly because John Proctor Elizabeth’s husband was having an affair with Abigail. Elizabeth’s coldness was the main cause of her husband’s disloyalty but she forgives him and does what is possible to keep her family together which is the most significant thing to her. Abigail desires john, but he loves his wife. She confesses to have seen the devil and danced for him with all the other girls. Elizabeth gets accused of being a witch by Abigail. Mary Warren Elizabeth’s servant friends with Abigail, informs her that she has been accused of being a witch. When john takes Mary to the court so she can testify against the girls they think it’s a bit suspicious. When the girls are brought into the court they accuse Mary of bewitching them. John gets fed up and he confesses to his affair with Abigail to prove that she is not a goodly person and that she is jealous of his wife. Elizabeth is brought to the court to prove of what john is saying is true but because of her kindness and her love for her husband she lies to protect his name. Abigail and the girls pretend Mary is bewitching them again which make Mary breakdown and accuse john of being a witch. After being tried as a witch and told he was going to get hanged he has a chance to confess and live but he chooses to die and keep his name. As a result of the lies and the affair between john and Abigail there were a lot of innocent people killed and hurt even those who they claimed they loved. Abigail and Elizabeth are two very different characters but have some similarities. Both Abigail and Elizabeth show determination in order to get what they want, and they are both strong
