10/3/12 I Own This Shit In this class, it is our goal to interpret euphemisms made about the bathroom and determine why the toilet is a place of shame. Ruth Barcan’s Dirty Spaces: Separation, Concealment, and Shame in the Public Toilet reveals why people look at the public toilets as being dirty. First, it is crucial to identify the “public” aspect of Barcan’s analysis. A public space is accessible to the general public and open to all that are in need of its services. Public spaces are where people come into contact with one another and meet new and unfamiliar people.
Literacy/illiteracy can greatly affect the population dynamics of a developing and modernized culture. 2. What do you think are the most important factors in solving or attempting to solve the world’s population problem? Personally, I think the most important factors in solving or attempting to solve the population problem of the world today are government care and a lack of resources [such as food and shelter]. In China for example, the adults [ages 20-40 years old] are working to pay their bills, and have no time to care for their kids.
It is difficult to spread new knowledge and technology into it and people inside refuse to learn new things. For instance, when western weapons and utensils were introduced in the 19 century, the conservative officials didn’t accept them and regarded them as something that were weird and impractical which was called qijiyinqiao(奇技淫巧) in Chinese. Therefore, the Forbidden City actually is a symbol of feudalism in China. It shows how traditional the old China was and the attitude adopted by the officials towards the foreigners and foreign advanced knowledge. The walls of the Forbidden City are meaningful as they seem to act as a barrier to segregate the inside and the outside world which makes China having no improvements throughout the hundred years.
The Obligation to Endure Rachel Carson challenges the progress that this world has taken and questions if it is truly progress at all. We as humans endanger and harm ourselves in ways that we are often unaware of. Carson persuades her audience, the progressive intellectuals, in her book, “Silent Spring”, that the use of chemicals is causing destruction and should be put to an end. She concentrates her ideas in the chapter “The Obligation to Endure”, where she goes against the horrible consequences of chemical use on pests. She elaborates on the issue of spraying chemicals and if it is increasing or decreasing the progress in the world.
Homework 2: Middlemist’s Ethics Several ethical violations from the Middlemist’s study arise, first the methodology used to conduct the research. Under the procedure section, it states “subjects were forced” to use a certain urinal. By forcing subjects into a particular situation, you are taking away their choice. In addition, the absence of informed consent essentially pressured the unknowing participant to remain at the urinal as to not violate any social norms. Accompanying the restriction of urinal selection is the fact that there is an interaction between the subject and the confederate.

September 16, 2010 “Unhealthy” Essay It is so disturbing after watching the film Sicko to find how a lot of hospitals and health insurance companies treat the patients that cannot afford health insurance. I knew that the healthcare field was a complete mess, but I never would have dreamed that some hospitals would literally dump them on the street with no medical help. Everyday people continue to amaze me, how they value money over everything, including for some, and their own lives. The United States healthcare industry seems to decline more each year, compared to other countries. I have to admit, before watching Michael Moore’s documentary, Sicko; I did not have the slightest clue how terrible the United States healthcare industry was.
People are starting to believe that smart phones are a necessity because of the various services that they supply. If these services are unavailable even for a day, most smart phone owners wouldn’t know how to function without them. In fact, in October 2011, Blackberries all over the world stopped working for three days, causing near rioting in the streets. Furthermore, even though these new devices are luxuries, they are not all necessities. Thanks to GPS systems people no longer know how to read maps and don’t ask for directions.
I believe that the top three environmental issues are; air pollution, lack of green space, and lack of public transportation systems. Nowadays, I see less green space around the houses and in the neighborhood and one of the reasons could be because of compact houses and less out door space. Air pollution is a huge environmental issue because it can lead to poor health. Pollution also affects the environment and looking at the research I realized the forests, US National Wildlife Refuse, and environmental recreation areas are far from the cities and it could be because of the pollution. One of the biggest reasons for pollution is lack of public transportation.
I. II. Extent of the Problem Imagine being really sick, getting a denial letter from your insurance company, and you have no money to get yourself treated. If you are an American, you will have no choice other than to go bankrupt or to eventually die of this illness. The United States is the only major industrialized nation that fails to cover all of its citizens with health care coverage. Nearly 47 million Americans, or 16 percent of the population, were without health insurance in 2005, the latest government data available (DeNavas-Walt).
