Termination of pregnancy has endless negative consequences for women. Termination of pregnancy is not the simple process of abruptly ending pregnancy in women, but a life changing event with significant physical and psychological consequences. For most women facing the fact that they have terminated pregnancy and lost a baby is traumatic and difficult to cope with in future. Termination of pregnancy is allowed within the first twelve weeks of pregnancy. Termination of pregnancy is commonly known as abortion and it can be legal or illegal. Legal abortion is prescribed by the doctor and it is done in terms of the law. Conversely illegal abortion is not prescribed by the doctor and done outside the law. In either case, abortion has negative consequences on women. In South Africa the Choice of Termination of Pregnancy Act Number 92 of 1996 stipulates the conditions under which pregnancy can be legally terminated. According to this law, pregnancies may be terminated if the physical or mental health of the mother is in danger, baby will cause major economic problems for the mother or when the woman’s pregnancy is a result of rape. Women choose to terminate pregnancy due to a variety of reasons which include medical concerns, pressure from friends and relatives to terminate pregnancy, lack of support from family or partner and various personality traits such as low self esteem. After terminating pregnancy, women face physical consequences that include excessive bleeding, damage to the womb , infection of the womb, damage of the cervix , sexual organ failure and perforation of the uterus. Most of the physical effects of abortion result in reproductive complications such premature birth and low birth weight babies. Abortion result in a woman delivering prematurely in future. The risk of premature delivery or low birth weight baby is considerably higher in women
