Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann takes place in a fictional future where Earth is ruled by the spiral king Lordgenome, who forces mankind underground in villages that are isolated from the surface world and have no communication with each other. Because these villages are underground they are under constant threat from earthquakes, so the village chief assigns diggers who are charged with the task of expanding the village further underground. Simon a young digger who is an outcast in the village finds comfort with his best friend and older brother figure Kamina, a defiant and bold delinquent, who allows Simon to join his gang Team Gurren to help him achieve his dream of reuniting with his father up on the surface. One day, while digging Simon discovers a key called a core drill that he manages to fashion into a necklace, and a small mecha called a gunman that resembles a “Giant Face”. Shortly afterwards the village is attacked by a giant gunman followed by a girl named Yoko who is trying to subdue the gunman. Simon uses the core drill that he dug up to activate the smaller gunman, whom Kamina names Lagann, and uses it to destroy the gunman and break through to the surface.…show more content…
Simon and Kamina soon find out that mankind on the surface is attacked daily by the beastmen, half man-half beast members of Lordgenomes army, in their gunmen. Kamina hijacks a gunman and names it Gurren; he uses it to combine with Lagann to form Gurren Lagann. Simon and Kamina inspire other humans to steal gunmen of their own and later join team Gurren, which is eventually renamed team Dai-Gurren, to Try and capture a giant enemy gunman fortress to use as their base of operations. At the end of the day team Dai-Gurren captures the fortress, though Kamina is killed in the battle
