Every child is different so we should adapt the way we communicate to fulfil the individual needs. Explain why effective communication is important in developing positive relationships with: Children Young people Adults Effective communication is fundamental in building positive relationships with all children, young people and adults. Children and young people acquire their communication skills by observing how adults interact with each other which will influence how they communicate and behave. Therefore, it is important for the Teaching Assistant, and other carers involved, to act as positive role models. Children and young people need to feel comfortable within their surroundings enabling them to separate more easily from their parents/carers. As they become more emotionally secure they are likely to become more actively involved with play or learning activities.

The government document Every Child Matters: Change for children 2004 is an important document to read which would benefit anyone working with children. To work and build on positive relationships with children there has to be a good understanding of putting the pupils needs first.
Explain why positive relationships with children and young people are important and how these are built and maintained. Children and young people become confident, independent and most resilient where they are secure in the relationships around them. Relationships take time to become established, because they are based on a growing understanding of one another. Effective communication helps children and young people develop confidence, feelings of self-worth and positive relationships with others. It also helps them grow into adults who have positive feelings about themselves and others.
The Framework demonstrates how important is communication and language, and also emotional and social development. Important is to keep children safe and healthy. Following the EYFS standard will help to prepare children for future life. The Curriculum is built around for principles: -UNIQUE CHILDREN- every child is unique with their own characteristic. Every area of development: physical, social, emotional, spiritual is important and individual.

How you approach people and how you respond to them should all come into account. You should always try to make children feel comfortable in your presence and try to put them at ease. To develop a positive relationship with a child can often take some time.
You also need to make sure you have good relationships with other staff members so that it can be a friendly place for the children to be around. It is important to have positive relationships with all the people that are involved in the care of all children and young people in my setting . These people could be staff, Managers and supervisors, carers/parents, OFSTED, Early years, or external partners. All positive relationships with these people will benefit the child as we could share the information quickly and accurately give constant care and always identify their needs and there interests. We could make more effective plans for their care and education whilst monitoring there welfare to show their skills and ideas.
Positive relationships enable information to be communicated far more effectively. Working in a school this will benefit pupils when you are dealing with parents or carers as they will be more willing to get involved in the child or young person’s education and care. Building and maintaining positive relationships and effective communication with pupils will help them know and understand what is expected of them and acceptable boundaries. In order to develop positive relationships with children, young people and adults effective communication is vital. To effectively communicate we must: • think consciously (everyone is an individual) • explain (be clear, use appropriate language) • listen actively ( occasional nods and eye contact) • be true to our word (say what you mean, mean what you say) • recall (repeat snippets of what has been said to you) • have empathy (non-bias understanding of others situations) • clarify and question (ask the other party if they understand what you have said ) • body language (your own and reading the other persons) Not putting the above skills into practice will create barriers to effective communication and positive
• Self-esteem and resilience are recognised as essential to every child or young person’s development. • Confidentiality and agreements about confidential information are respected as appropriate unless a child or young person’s protection and well-being are at stake. • Professional knowledge, skills and values are shared appropriately in order to enrich the experience of children and young people more widely.
Other essential aspects to be considered include the following: Showing respect and taking the time to listen, making sure of clarity on key points, showing consideration for others and remembering personal issues, finally being effective in your communication and retaining a good sense of humour. Providing these strategies are followed it should ensure that the relationships that are developed in school are positive for all parties involved. It is vital that the ways in which we can develop this is given great thought as positive relationships are not something which should be left to chance. Different social, professional and cultural contexts might affect relationships and the way in which people communicate with one another. Adaptation in different situations to combat this is necessary, for example, in a meeting more formal language and clothing would be appropriate.
