Lioret Kuhre, Nate Valdez, Dawn Mitchell Business Policy 01/31/2012 Dick’s Sporting Goods and Hibbet Sports on the surface seem like direct competitors in a similar market. Comparing the two should be an “apples to apples” type comparison; however, after digging deeper it’s more of an “apples to oranges” comparison. The two stores definitely focus on sporting goods; however Hibbetts seems to focus mainly on football, basketball, baseball, boxing and general fitness equipment. Dick’s has equipment for basically any sport you can think of. So there is definitely a noticeable difference when it comes to the financial reports. As for their store locations they are usually situated in strip malls and shopping centers, this is an effective placement strategy because customers do not have to make a conscience effort to drive to the store, rather they come to the mall and walk past the store and perhaps this triggers some impulse buys. Hibbetts has a large number of employees compared to the average store size. It has an amazing training program for its employees which would lead some to think that this would be a great source of competitive advantage. Hibbetts also offers a wide variety of benefits to its employees including a College savings plan. Since Hibbett stores are usually located in strip malls and shopping centers they use very intense displays to get the attention of their customers, and usually these displays are based on the local interests. For example, here in Lawton basketball and football are really the two sports that a lot of people here are interested in, so our local Hibbett store displays the latest sneakers, jerseys, and equipment related to these sports. Basically Hibbetts spends about $5 dollars less than Dick’s to produce their merchandise. One factor that stands out is the difference in distribution channels. Hibbetts has one main distribution center and its headquarters is located near it as well. Dick’s has three distribution centers. Also, Dick’s has a wider variety of merchandise that they need to provide and usually they are name brand, which cost more to make and sell.
