By showing that she has taken 2 years to come up with a decision, and yet tells the media of her decision first instead of the “Premier” shows her “’passion’ for improving education”. The writer also says “words fail me” instead of just the word shock as it has a greater impact on the reader. By showing the fact that, Colebatch, himself, is “the economics editor of THE AGE shos that he is also a stakeholder in the situation and his view is credible. The cartoon further supports the argument for “Gonski reforms”. The broken windows, terrible condition of the school position the readers to show pity for the children studying in the schools.

For example, Obama expresses that, “crumbling schools are stealing the future of black children and white children and Asian children and Hispanic children and Native children” (373). He identifies these variety of races to show that this problem do not merely affect one race, but it affects everyone. The concept of limiting possibilities for any child to grow and succeed in their future is something that is meant to catch any parents attention. He uses pathos as a strategy to hook adults and parents because they are able to have a personal connection with what he is saying. Near the ending of his speech President Obama tells a heart felt story of a young twenty- three year old girl, whose mother was diagnosed with cancer when she was nine years old.

“To develop their critical thinking skills!!! Hat tip Atlas Shrugs I am croiss-posting this story direct from Atlas Shrugs because Pam Geller says it quite well. In the Rialto, California School District, students are being assigned to write an essay arguing whether the Holocaust actually happened or was invented to “influence public emotion and gain”. http://pamelageller.com/2014/05/california-school-district-defends-writing-assignment-confirming-denying-holocaust.html/ First of all, even Germany admits to the Holocaust and educates its younger generations about what happened-at least since the late 1960s when their younger generation started asking questions of their parents and demanding answers. Of course, that was in West Germany.
But seeing a world of hate, and discrimination through the eyes of Klugar and Amara, it is almost impossible to separate the two. Amara’s link of religion to social class is shown through her recollection of her peers view of her based on theses factors alone. “At school, along with the other children from the housing project, we were called the “kids from Herbet,” which was a way of identifying our neighborhood as the Arab quarter” pg.48. The way her schoolmates write her off as just being another herbet kid, shows the superior attitude that must have been prevalent around them. Kluger’s religion and ethnicity shaped the entire course of her life as well.
There needs to be better treatment of immigrants and the labor system. The immigrants went from being victims of 9-11 terrorism, to targets. I really enjoyed reading about Mamdouh’s experiences. I think it’s important that every high school makes this apart of their readings. I think it will open up the minds of students to how immigrants live day to day
In a short story by Lorraine Ali called “Do I Look Like Public Enemy Number One,” she evokes every struggle she went through. “ ‘ You’re not a terrorist, are you?’ That pretty much was a stock question I faced growing up. Classmates usually asked it after they heard my last name: “Ali” sounded Arabic; therefore, I must be some kind of bomb-lobbing religious fanatic with a grudge against Western Society” (60). Even students in elementary were aware of who the enemy was. Ali recalls, “In elementary school, we forced smiles through taunts like, ‘Hey Ali, where’s your oilcan?’ ”(61) Intuitively, Ali was recognized as part of a culture America love to hate.
It is for the purpose of labeling peers and deciphering which children are inferior, it is the social aspect of schooling. Lastly, the propaedeutic function teaches a minimal amount of children to manage the population to that the government can continue without being challenged. Initially I was taken aback while reading Gatto’s article, particularly in regards to Inglis six functions but upon further review and digging deep into my own personal experiences with the public education system, predominantly looking at my years spent in high school I would say there are some sad realities behind theses six
The ones who believes in creationism should be sent to a religious school. I believe what Zack Kopplin is fighting for is right and it is definitely influencing what we learn in a good way. Kopplin is a good example of why students shall also have a say in what we learn in our schools curriculum. Another student named Katelyn Campbell, 18, whom I believed also influenced our curriculum in a good way, thought that her school gave false information about sex education. An abstinence advocate Ms. Pam Stenzel came to her school in Charleston, Virginia to educate the students about sex.
