In this novel, Johnny’s demeanor and struggles solving conflicts show how living on the streets can impact the way a person develops. “Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot! But all the wrong things, not the things you want to learn.” This quote refers to how ultimately limiting growing up in the streets can be. The first sentence (“Sixteen years on the streets and you can learn a lot!”) talks about how someone who grew up in the streets can be exposed to various situations where they need to learn much about certain things in order to fend for themselves, which one could infer includes mature and even illegal subjects. This is something that people who were traditionally raised know relatively nothing of, which gives a sort of advantage to those who were raised in the streets by letting them adapt to tough situations more easily.
FAHCSIA (2012) justifies its view on family factors as the causes by providing data; 67% of teens left a home that had single-parent household or remarried families. Parents’ divorce or a mother or a father passing away leads to family change. Young people come into conflict with their single parent, which over time causes emotional break down. Teenagers find it difficult to deal with the relationship with new family members. In addition, family breakdown is a potential issue for violence.
There are so many reasons as to which juveniles can talk themselves into joining gangs. Reasons having to do with family problems or even involvement in the gangs, to friends being there, making money fast and having a sense of “security” when with his or her gang members. One of the main reasons why kids partake in gang activity is because of a neglected feeling from their family. “If young people aren’t getting positive attention from parents, joining a gang certainly provides lots of negative attention. Youth who are angry at a parent may join a gang to shock or be defiant toward the parent”.
Social Disorganization Question and Answer Staycee Gibson CJA/384 December 16, 2013 Jessica Vesey What is Social Disorganization? Social disorganization is defined as complications of social ideas that create productive means of crime and social absence needed to form bonding elements and communal institutions related to family, friends, public settings, and social environments (Abadinsky, 2007). This type of organization often leads to delinquency committed by adults and youth when communities display negative support in activities involving moral decay of social control. Social disorganization is caused by anti-social inabilities involving community members and abnormal behavior from the same individuals that need complete guidance or support to perform proactive capabilities of social status. Given the facts, £3.5 million are spent on children with broken homes, it is seen that in those families, majority of the youngsters are grown up without a dad which Christina finds relations on explaining why summer riots of 2011 occurred. As mass numbers of the rioters was gang members, who were loyal to their groups and were led by the stronger figure, they were all seen as having something in common: no father figure for them to follow as they grew up. It is recognized that, what the explanation of the riots are more about the background of the family, the individuals came from and how it affected them to choose the unfortunate path which later on leads them behind bars. The article implies that children are in need of a father figure; otherwise they will end up being a criminal to society and join in events which harms the community like the
Environment Environment has had a powerful influence on developing youth, most importantly in areas of lower household income. Being surrounded by gangs, racial discrimination, or lack of education (all components of the environment) has influenced the youth into the choices they have made in life, either making or breaking them. The youth makes choices that make them feel comfortable during the time without analyzing them carefully because of the way they were raised and the environment in which they grew in; for example, “Monster” by Sanyika Shakur is a first-hand account of the experiences of a south central Los Angeles gang member that grew in a troubled environment in where many gangs were located and that led him into the choices
Homelessness has been dealt with by the development of social institutions and set of social practices like allocation of resources, and the allocation of status. Homelessness is not the governments fault entirely. Although the government appears to alienate the homeless population by cutting its investment in affordable housing nationally, they do provide city shelters with tools to help the homeless. In reality, the causes of homelessness are without a doubt, a matter of bad luck, personal problems, addiction, and choice. Life is rough and sometimes things do not work out, but as an individual, everyone is responsible for their life outcomes and focusing all causes of homelessness on the government is completely unrealistic.
As individuals in society we need to fight and change our state of mind to what we know as “homeless.” Because there is more to being homeless than just living on the streets. Even as adults we forget to teach our kids to think better than we do instead we feed them ideas of what we know is true already. But how many of us truly know what being homeless truly is? In order to fix the growing problem of homelessness we first need to change as individuals as well as a
Kenyatta Waters Fu English III March 5, 2013 Gangs Gangs are made up of young men and women that grow up in harsh, underprivileged backgrounds who look for someone for social support and protection. Younger individuals in ghettos and lower classes see that they’re limited to things they could do, so gang membership is like a family, place to belong, and a strong sense of power. Gangs are like a business that hires anyone and sometimes the only chance many young ones have in getting a job. Although parents and school officials have tried to discourage gangs by outlawing these gang colors and styles, gangs have historically fulfilled real needs among underprivileged youth. Gang memberships in the 1950s weren’t always dealing with crimes but it
““Poverty is like punishment for a crime you didn’t commit.” – Eli Khamarov (Free the Children, 2005) In the world today there are a variety of different social problems, these social problems can affect some more than others. A social problem can be defined as a situation affecting a significant number of people, which are believed to be sources of difficulty or threaten the strength of the community. The social problem I decided to examine is Child Poverty in Canada. Child poverty will be dealing with mainly and directly children although, on occasion if the child is suffering from poverty than the parent is too. Child Poverty usually only goes to children who are under the age of eighteen, therefore I have chose to do my research on children under the age of eighteen.
