Scene: Stalking Mattie Song: “Every Breath You Take” Artist: The Police Justification: This song appropriately represents the essence behind the scene in which Ethan is intently watching Mattie. The theme of the song coincides with the theme of the scene: admiration from afar. Just as Ethan longs for Mattie’s love and shows this through his constant watch of her, the song’s lyrics also resonate this same idea. The first verse of the song could not represent this idea any better, “Every breath you take, every move you make, every bond you break, every step you take, I’ll be watching you.” These lyrics from the song further justify why it fits in so well with this scene from the novel; just as Ethan watches Mattie, the narrator in the song also watches the girl he is in love with.
