When you are healthier then you tend to feel better about yourself and lead a better lifestyle. When you are not fit and healthy a number of health problems arise which has an effect on your everyday lifestyle. Health problems such as diabetes are a sign of somebody who does not exercise and is unhealthy. In the UK, diabetes affects approximately 2.8 million people. More than one million people are thought to have undiagnosed type 2 diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is far more common than type 1 diabetes, which occurs when the body does not produce any insulin at all. Around 90% of all adults in the UK with diabetes have type 2 diabetes. Cardiovascular diseases account for more than 150,000 deaths a year in the United Kingdom. Cardiovascular diseases affect more than five million people, and annual costs exceed £30bn. However, more than 80% of CVD can be avoided. The UK government strategy for the primary prevention of cardiovascular disease therefore focuses on a dual approach. National Health Service (NHS) health checks to detect and treat people at high risk which will benefit the entire population over time, such as smoke-free public places and the progressive reduction in the salt content of processed food.
