Spoken Language Study Spoken language is very important. The home is a very significant place, it is where people feel safe and secure because they are surrounded by the people they love. The home is also special because when someone is at work or in school, they have a certain image to hold, therefore they might use certain words, whereas at home, the person’s language is likely to be more informal and true to what they are like in real life. The home is special as you are more relaxed, less self-conscious, compared to at school or work where you are constantly being judged for the way you look and the way you speak. However in the home you may be more restricted, as you might not be allowed to swear or use certain language. My family consists of six people: my mum, my dad, my three sisters and me. We are a very traditional, nuclear family; however the language we use is not traditional, as we use a mixture of two different languages. My dad is the head of the house, as his job provides for everyone, whereas my mum stays at home and cooks and cleans, like the stereotypical housewife of a family. My dad spends most of his time at work, so whenever we see him there is almost happiness that we see him, because we do not know him or sees him as much as we see our mum, whereas with my mum there is a much tenser atmosphere, because she is far stricter than my dad. Nearly everyone in our family can speak Standard English with the exception of my mum who speaks English with a slight accent, she can speak English if she wants to but she would use a lot of fillers and false starts Recently my younger teenage sister was having a conversation with my mum. She was basically asking for money so that she could go out with her friends. The conversation took place while my mum was watching T.V, It was clear that my sister had been planning to ask her and I think she chose that
