Socioemotional Development of School Age Children Arneathia MPJ Brown Liberty University Socioemotional Development of School Age Children Introduction Educators, parents, and other family members are all responsible for how children develop both socially and emotionally. Social and emotional development does not develop from the school teacher only. It does not develop from the parents only. And, it does not develop from other family members only. It develops from the cooperative efforts and involvement of everyone together. This paper will discuss socio-emotional development in school age children. Also included with this paper, in the appendix, are (5) interview question presented four children. The subjects are a preschooler, a student in elementary school, and a middle and high school student. Socio-emotional Development – Preschool Years The preschool years are an important time in a child’s development. These skills will be imperative during that time. It is important that parents or the caregiver know what the child should be able to do at a certain age. This will help the parent or caregiver be on alert for potential problems, and provide opportunities for children to practice and sharpen their skills in their natural settings. Slavin (2012) found that social network grows from an intimate relationship with parents or other guardians to include other family members, nonrelated adults and peers. This interaction starts at home and extends to school and other social settings. Peer relationship and play are important to socio-emotional development during preschool years. During preschool years, peers play a significant role in children’s cognitive and social development. Peer play allows development between other ones of similar cognitive development around the same age. When peer conflict develops children are able to resolve
