Women in the 1950’s were expected to stay home, and were more or less left out of everything that were to be of importance. Likewise women in the Crucible were expected to stay in the background of the Salem witch trials unless they themselves were expected to be witches themselves. However, the majority of individuals that were under suspicion of being witches were female. They were blamed for multiple things they did not commit. Thus, showing that women in the 17th century were treated poorly just like women in the 1950s.
To ensure that people continued to believe this concept the church used this verse from the bible as proof “woman in her greatest perfection was made to serve and obey man.” This belief put women in a state of being mentally isolated from men. Being second-rate citizens meant that few of them received any formal education; because they lacked schooling they became intellectually isolated from anyone whom had received any type of formal education. During this time period women were beaten into submission when they failed to instantly comply with the orders any male relative gave them. Shakespeare wrote about many of these Elizabethan beliefs in his play Othello. The play centralized around the lust for one very beautiful, young girl Desdemona.
The women did domestic work, taking care of children, or spinning and weaving. The Young men often played sports and females were forbidden to watch. Girls didn’t really do much physical activity. Inequality/roles - Respectable wives roles were to keep pretty, stay home, and to bear ( take care of) the children. If a wife wanted to get a divorce she would loose everything including her children, and would have to return home to their male figure.
Sexism Sexism caused a lot of problems in history. For example during the industrial revolution women are prevented to have a job that is paid equally as a man does although they do more work than a men does, and this lead to women rights movement. In ancient China women were not allow to go out they couldn’t have a job all they do is stay at home and do housework. It’s not really because their religion didn’t allow them. It’s because Chinese people think after women get married they will live with their husband and they will become a part of the other family.

History 201 Professor Studebaker “Her-Story of Women’s Suffrage” Makyla Pittman Imagine living a life filled with all forms of discrimination where you have no voice in the government under which you live and in the equality of social life where you are a chief factor. It is a difficult scenario to visualize and before the 19th century that was the reality of a women’s position in this world. With limited access, a young wife and mother was expected to manage a household, train her children, keep her friends and sustain the affections of her husband. In a world filled with patriarchal constraints women were forced to fall back on their instinctive resources of common sense, wisdom, diplomacy and knowledge of human nature. Education, employment, and politics are all barriers where women were held back from the full development of their faculties.
Greek Men were involved in a number of activities, such as military training, politics, sailing, hunting, manufacturing in trade, and other ‘manly’ considered roles. On the contrary, women in ancient Greece usually did not have jobs. They were not involved in public life or in politics; women were expected to stay home and take care of the home duties and children; they also watched over the slaves (if owned any) that worked in their homes. Women were not allowed to watch theater nor perform at the theater (University Press Inc, 2012). Women were also not allowed to compete or watch the Olympics; they were, however, able to hold games of their own (Fiero, 2011).
She hated her husband, Anse and wanted no connections to him what so ever which was why she wished to be buried in Jefferson with her family rather than his. “Motherhood was invented by someone who had to have a word for it because the ones that had the children didn’t care whether there was a word for it or not.” Addie describes how that life is miserable and only offers great opportunities to those who are given it rather than those who earn or deserve it. Woman had it rough during the 1920s. Addie had very little opportunities and felt trapped in the world she lived. “She watches me, I can feel her eyes.
Moreover, if a woman did not marry she would not be permitted to live independently. Instead, they either live under the responsibility of a male relative or more often join a convent or a nunnery. Single women were often associated with witches as people were suspicious of their nature. Similarly, women did not receive the same education as men. Upper class girls were tutored at home rather than going to school.
With women not being allowed to receive degrees or attend college, it made it very difficult for women to get jobs. Towards the middle of the 19th century, it was nearly impossible for women to become doctors, architects, engineers, accountants or bankers. Women could become teachers, but teaching was a low-status job and had horrible pay. Women could also be secretaries or nurses but being a teacher was the only socially acceptable profession for women in the 19th century. After a long fight by women, the government finally allowed them to become doctors.
