Social Media Impact on Adolescent California State University Fullerton Health Promotion: Parent and Child Nursing NURSING 307 November 07, 2011 Social Medias Impact on Adolescent With social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and MySpace there are multiple means for adolescents to get connected and socialize. Our generation has become completely consumed by these social medias, with 22% of teenagers logging on to their favorite social media site more than 10 times a day (O'Keeffe 2011). With these social networks becoming one of the main way adolescents communicate their impact on adolescents choice has both positive and negative impact on adolescent’s development into adulthood. Some benefits of usage of social networks include expression of artist skills through sharing own composed music, Improvement of social skills by providing access to communication with people of all different walks of life, and increase in self-expression with ability to post blog and podcast expressing their opinion. Even more critical than the benefits of social networks comes the negative outcomes of such social medias usage. Some risks to usage of social network include cyber bullying in which adolescents are singled out as outcast and site such as Facebook or MySpace are used as a source of humiliation for those adolescent with the ability for posting of false commits, and allow hostile and embarrassing information to be posted without the approval of those involved. Another common negative impact for adolescent’s usage of social networks is the increase in sexting which is defined as “sending, receiving, or forwarding sexually explicit messages, photographs, or images via cell phone, computer, or other digital devices” (O'Keeffe 2011). With an average of 20% of teens having sent or posted nude or seminude photographs or videos of themselves (O'Keeffe 2011). With the
