Belonging is a fundamental aspect of the human condition. Sharing of similar values and morality between an individual and the community in which they reside, enriches their sense of belonging as a result of expectations being met. Complete conformity ensures an individual’s membership to a group or unity, therefore enhancing their sense of belonging. Individuals who do not conform to the norms and conventions of the society in which they reside are denied membership, and as a result, live a life of isolation and fail to belong. These comparative experiences of belonging prevail through Raimond Gaita’s memoir Romulus My Father, and Ed Sheeran’s song lyrics The A Team.
Belonging to certain groups has its benefits, by which we gain a sense of security, confidence and the feeling of having a place in this world. Our Friends and imitate relationships we make with others are one of the strongest groups we belong to by choice. The Groups we choose to belong to are because of shared values, interests, appearance and so on, which in return gives us the sense we belong and connection to others. In Stephan Chbosky’s novel ‘The perks of being a wallflower’ , Charlie was an outsider and never did fit in until one day he found himself belonging to group. “I just remember walking between them and feeling for the first time that I belonged somewhere”.
Skrzynecki’s words, “gentle father kept pace only with the Joneses of his own mind’s making” as quoted from his poem ‘Feliks Skrzynecki’ exhibits, through the descriptive word ‘gentle’ and the metaphorical use of ‘only with the Joneses of his own mind’s making’, the obvious admirations of son to father as well as the childhood lesson of staying true to oneself. Thus, upholding the concept of belonging in the English curriculum as well as continuing the analysis of Skrzynecki’s poems is vital as it permits students to understand the notion of familial relationships. After all without our family, who else could we belong to? Will Hodkinson’s feature article “Marked as an enemy of the state” also demonstrates the importance of familial belonging. Baldaev’s widowed wife Valentina expresses her strong emotions when referring to Baldaev’s drawings as “she didn’t know what to do with them, but she was concerned that her family would throw them out when she died.
Belonging and being accepted into a group can have both negative and positive effects on an individual’s sense of personal identity. As humans we naturally want to belong and feel accepted. We are usually brought up in a specific way and mingle with people that are similar to us and without knowing we form an invisible bond with these people. Whether it may be religious views, cultural similarities or similar up bringing all these factors help us to become the person we are. Lars Fr.
Aristotle once said, “The impulse to form partnership of this kind is present in all men by nature.” Knowledge of one’s identity through knowledge of where one belongs can give meaning to life and bring about happiness, while exclusion can trigger a sense of unworthiness, even inferiority, and alienation as shown through the poetry of Peter Skryznecki and the film ‘Into the Wild’ We chose the poems of Peter Skrzynecki as our prescribed text and there is a greater sense of not belonging and alienation in every poem than belonging and acceptance. It is almost that he wants us to feel sympathy and condolence for him in his poems. Poems such as ‘Migrant Hostel, Ancestors and Feliks Skryznecki’ convey his message of being estranged and isolated from his identity of the polish culture and his uncertain future. To convey these views Skrzynecki uses a variety of techniques, the main ones being: metaphors, similes, personification, rhetorical questions and the use of tone. The poem Migrant hostel (Parkes 1949-1951) carries authencity and themes of difficulties assimilating into a new culture, feelings of uncertainty and insecurity and therefore issues surrounding identity, or the lack OF identity.
Love, on the other hand, makes everyone feel wanted. It makes one feel important as if they have found the meaning to life. True love provides emotions, comfort, stability and commitment to each other. Loving someone creates a good feeling. Throughout a relationship, love progresses.
However so, we as human beings share the most basic emotions and feelings and the way life goes for many of us, is the same, to some extend. No matter what, there are numerous similarities that we share as human beings. This essay will discuss how Gogol and Boulle explore what we share as human beings and will confer about them in terms of seeking contentment, a purpose in life, egoism among humans, fear of change in our lives, the will to survive and compassion within us. Firstly, we as humans all find the need to have something in life that we do, that we are content with, something repetitive, like a job for instance. Something that makes us happy, and us humans all have some sort of contentment although it may vary from individual to individual.
Instead, these individuals may attain the same sense of belonging outside of relationships, through their connections to other things such as place and culture, or within themselves. Steven Herrick’s ‘The Simple Gift’ and Melina Marchetta’s ‘Looking For Alibrandi’ are two texts in which explores the concept of belonging and how different individuals have different meanings of a sense of belonging. This shows that individuals can find a sense of belonging in a great range of place, not limited to relationships. In The Simple Gift, Steven Herrick both supports and challenges traditional assumptions about belonging. Through the form of a verse novel he supports the idea that all humans seek a sense of belonging, and that without it our lives have little meaning.
