How do Gogol and Boulle explore what we share as human beings? What conclusions do they reach? All human beings are born equal but from second two, things start to differentiate. Where are you born, how your family is, the environment you grow in, your health, your looks, and the education that you shall receive in your life. However so, we as human beings share the most basic emotions and feelings and the way life goes for many of us, is the same, to some extend. No matter what, there are numerous similarities that we share as human beings. This essay will discuss how Gogol and Boulle explore what we share as human beings and will confer about them in terms of seeking contentment, a purpose in life, egoism among humans, fear of change in our lives, the will to survive and compassion within us. Firstly, we as humans all find the need to have something in life that we do, that we are content with, something repetitive, like a job for instance. Something that makes us happy, and us humans all have some sort of contentment although it may vary from individual to individual. In The Overcoat, Akaky is extremely content with his work of plain copying, although to us it may seem boring and dull, but this job of his brings him contentment, and joy. Akaky does not just do it as a job but he does it with such enjoyment. “One would be hard put to find a man anywhere who so lived for his work. To say he worked with zeal would be an understatement: no, he worked with love”(p.143). Akaky is so content with his job and with his life that bothers not about anything else such as socializing or making friends as said; “No one could remember ever having see him at a party. After he had copied to his heart’s content he would go to bed, smiling in anticipation of the next day and what God would send him to copy”(p.145). A conclusion drawn from this reading
