Introduction Love him or loath him, Simon Cowell is arguably one of the most influential people in popular music and television. TV Producer, Media Mogul, Music Producer and TV Personality Cowell’s career now encompasses a wide range of creative and media disciplines. From relatively humble beginnings in the post room at EMI, his hugely successful television shows; The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent have redefined ITV’s prime time schedule and have significantly changed the way in which we are exposed to and the ways in which we consume music, with television now playing a major role in the marketing and publication of music, the establishment of celebrities - however fleeting their fame may be, and the amount of record sales the label receive. With countless Number 1’s under his belt, the man behind the Robson and Jerome and Zig and Zag singles, certainly knows how to sell records to the masses. Chapter 1 - From Post-room Boy to Mr. Nasty Cowell was brought up in Elstree, close to the famous Elstree Studios. From a young age Cowell and his family were immersed in ‘a brand new world of celebrity’ (Cowell, S., 2003). Stars such as Roger Moore and Stanley Kubrick were frequent visitors to the Cowell family home Abbots Mead. It wasn’t long until Abbots Mead was a ‘whirl of film industry parties’ (Cowell, Simon. 2003). A soundtrack of the swinging 60’s accompanied Cowell’s childhood. Music from the Beatles filled the airwaves and Cowell was determined to own a guitar like his brother Tony. Realizing the terrible racket him and his classmates were making, Cowell raised his hand and exclaimed ‘Miss, this is absolutely dreadful,” Thus spawning a career that would eventually earn him millions.
