There are some similarities in them, either in propose or the usage of rhetorical device. Firstly, the ideas delivered mainly focus on the current situation, and inspiration of American dreams. Being confronted with the Cold War, in his address what Kennedy wants to deliver is to make the whole world know its policy, let all the nations understand its choice, that is, America will take the significant task to bring the freedom back, the freedom of its own nation, the freedom of the world. Again Obama uses emotive language to appeal to patriotism. “an American family” and “we rise and fall together” Family is a very strong and poignant description which Obama is using to paint the image of one unit. The president mentions ‘America’ throughout the text. As this is a victory speech, the word America is a power word, and strongly emits feelings of patriotism and pride. In the third paragraph, president Obama repeats the word ‘tonight’, bringing the audience back to the present victory.
He says “put their hands on the arc of history and bend it” in reference to his audience. The “arc of history” is an abstract noun, But Obama describes it in context with a proper noun, developing the technique further, allowing his thoughts to synchronise with those of the audience. The fact that they can bend “The arc of history” to shape a better future is a conclusion to his argument on the power of democracy, the power that America holds dear. The ridiculous portion of our budget that is spent on defense could be much better spent on social welfare, health, and education. The United States usually leads the world in military funding. In 2012, the United States spent approximately $806 billion on our military budget, which covers about 27% of the country’s federal funds budget. We don’t need such a massive, sprawling military policing the entire world to be safe. Pouring even 5% of the money we spend on defense into education and health care would give this country some lasting benefits that would help us achieve a brighter future.
Healthy People 2020 I think is one of the most important move that the state should make in order to make the vision of having healthy Americans, including all migrants, ethnic and minority groups, by the year 2020. Though free service is not always the key to have access to quality healthcare the state can definitely find ways such as moving funds to have an affordable medical insurance to cover all Americans so that everyone in America can avail of healthcare services as the need arises to have better chances of improving health by making it available and accessible to ever individual at once. A smaller set of Healthy People 2020 objectives, called Leading Health Indicators, has been selected to communicate high-priority health issues and actions that can be taken to address them. These objective areas include: Clinical preventive services, environmental quality, Injury and violence, maternal, Infant, and child health, mental health, nutrition, physical activity, and obesity, oral health, reproductive and sexual health, social determinants, substance abuse and tobacco. To achieve the goal of achieving healthy American people by the year 2020, Healthy People 2020 have formulated a step in gradually bringing about change in the health status of the community by Mobilizing partners, assessing the needs of the community, creating and implementing a plan to reach the goal set and tracking the plan’s progress along the process (US Department of Health and Human Services, 2012).
After decades of failed attempts by democratic presidents; president Obama finally signed the health care reform in March 2010. Although I am glad that he signed this health care reform, I believe that his decision to sign this bill seemed to be pressured into changing things because he felt he has to immediately. Now we all know that since Obama became president, the American people have been anxiously waiting for some changes. I know the healthcare reform is a priority right now but it should be addressed carefully. There's no need to rush through legislations if we want this major issue to be unraveled; I would rather get it right then get it quick.
