Self-Concept and Accurate Impression Formation Joseph A. DeVito defines interpersonal communication in his book Interpersonal Messages, third edition as, “communication between two persons or among a small group of persons and distinguished from public or mass communication; communication of a personal nature and distinguished from impersonal communication; communication between or among connected persons or those involved in a close relationship” (DeVito, 268). Communication helps us develop our perception of ourselves as wells as of others. We are able to define our self-concept through communication. “Self-concept comes from the image of you that others have and reveal to you, the comparisons you make between yourself and others, the teachings of your culture, and the way you interpret and evaluate your own thoughts and behaviors” (DeVito, 54). Our means of building a positive self-image and self-concept through communication involves being able to effectively communication our thoughts and ideas to another person, or persons. When we can manage this we raise our self-esteem and self-concept. Thus, improving our self-perception and self-image. All of these things fall under our perception of self, these fundamental elements of self are: “self-concept (the way you see yourself), self-awareness (your insight into and knowledge about yourself), and self-esteem (the values you place on yourself) (DeVito, 54). The idea of being able to effecting communicating our thoughts and ideas enhancing our self-concept also works in regards to other people as well. When we are not able to communicate our thoughts and ideas effectively and clearly to another person, then this will harm the perception they form about us. Thus, our self-concept can be affected negatively through their image of you and that they reveal to you. They can reveal this information to you by being
