When thinking about ancient Rome in present day, students and historians usually make reference to one person, Julius Caesar, who is acknowledged as one of the most powerful dictators. The question remains, did the people of Rome believe that Caesar was a good ruler? Marcus Licinius Crassus was the wealthiest man in Rome through real estate, but his social status was very low. After his family name was stripped away from them during the Marian-Cinnan prescriptions, he was on a journey to work his way back up the social ladder. With the help from Julius Caesar, he was able to achieve what he wanted, recognition from the Roman people, while Crassus in return reciprocated the favor by lending Caesar as much money as he needed in hopes of becoming
"Men and Gods on the Roman Nile." The American Historical Review 74 (1969): 1256. The article provides information which could be useful in learning about some of the gods that Roman men would have worshipped. It tells little about ancient Roman men. Isn’t that the exact reason why we should keep it or make it official in the first place? Yes Latin, Greek, and Indo-European are languages that aren’t as commonly known anymore however that doesn’t mean that they don’t exist at all. Greek is spoken by 99% of the population in Greece and even though it originated in Rome, Latin is still spoken just very little.. The languages are still being taught and researched by universities and historians around the world. Maybe the languages are dead, but they are not extinct, numbers just have lowered
Rome & America Can studying ancient Rome help us better understand our own culture, political system, and society? I believe that it can, as history and anthropology in general can. But what specifically about ancient Rome makes it a common analogy to America? In Are We Rome?, author Cullen Murphy argues that indeed America is a lot like ancient Rome, and the similarities are surprising. While Murphy covers a variety of subjects for comparison in his book, I have chosen to look specifically at the military similarities, which Murphy does in chapter two his book, aptly titled The Legions.
Historical Connection of Past and Present A Canticle for Lebowitz begins after a post-apocalyptic event occurs known as the Flame Deluge. The aftermath is explained in three different parts: “Fiat Homo”, “Fiat Lux”, and “Fiat Voluntas Tua”. These parts resemble eras that have occurred in our own history. “Fiat Homo” represents the Dark Ages, “Fiat Lux” the Renaissance, and “Fiat Voluntas Tua” the future. Miller’s reasoning behind the similarity is to point out that mankind does not learn from our mistakes, and that the past is repeat to repeat itself in this vicious self-destructing cycle.
Censoring a Classic The article “Don’t Censor Mark Twain’s N-Word” by Leonard Pitts Jr. discusses the changes made to a great piece of American Literature. The n-word will no longer be used in the newly published versions of Mark Twain’s classic Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. Pitts claims there are many reasons why this should be considered wrong. Pitts explains that it was the author’s choice to use that word. The readers also have a choice to read the classic or not but, changing it should not be in question.
