Historical Connection of Past and Present A Canticle for Lebowitz begins after a post-apocalyptic event occurs known as the Flame Deluge. The aftermath is explained in three different parts: “Fiat Homo”, “Fiat Lux”, and “Fiat Voluntas Tua”. These parts resemble eras that have occurred in our own history. “Fiat Homo” represents the Dark Ages, “Fiat Lux” the Renaissance, and “Fiat Voluntas Tua” the future. Miller’s reasoning behind the similarity is to point out that mankind does not learn from our mistakes, and that the past is repeat to repeat itself in this vicious self-destructing cycle. This contributed to the rarity of written records and an obscurity as to what transpired during these harsh times. The church grasped to what knowledge they could, and served as the only provider of education. As a result, the average person was illiterate and what they knew mostly derived from the bible. People lived in horrific conditions that were optimal for certain diseases, or one in particular: The Black Plague. Events similar take place in A Canticle for Leobowtiz’s “Fiat Homo”. It embarks on the journey of a 17-year-old novice named Brother Francis Gerard after the Flame Deluge. This catastrophic event destroyed most of the former civilization, and facilitated a step back for ingenuity. Consequently, education no longer becomes a necessity, but the explanation behind this apocalyptic event thus, leading to a decline in literacy and intelligence. The church served as a library filled to the brim with ancient texts and scrolls, and was the only form of education. People lived in poverty and fear much as they did after the fall of the Roman Empire. The "Pope’s Children" were a major threat to healthy human beings. This translates to “Let There Be Light” and resembles the Renaissance. The Renaissance was a transition out of the Dark Ages and into a more modern world where people began to value education and explore the possibilities of the world. Literacy rates began to rise and artists became recognized for their work. Many significant figures, such as DaVinci, emerged from this time as well. These people helped encourage others to think outside the box and question society itself. The foundation of science was created and simple inventions like the mechanical clock arose. Tension between church and science began to emerge as this new way of thinking spread. The basics of politics are another aspect of the renaissance, and they helped contribute to diplomatic conventions. In “Fiat Lux” distinctive groups of people begin to develop that correlated with their culture and region. Thon Taddeo is sent by the mayor, Hannegan, of Texarkana to study the Order’s preserved collection of Memorbilia. Literacy rates began to rise and education became more important. This causes the development of scholars like Thon Taddeo to ask questions and research. The foundation of science is built by the experiments of characters such as Brother Kornhoer who invents an arc lamp. As education grows so does he lust for power.
