The Risks of Using Facebook Patrick Bennett EN1010 - English Composition I Mark Cuthbertson December 19, 2011 The Risks of Using Facebook In recent years the growing popularity of Facebook is more prevalent in our daily lives and surrounded by many people who use it on a regular basis. The presence of Facebook has turned into a major concern for a lot of people, because it becomes mainly an obsession to constantly be connected online rather to be connected within our real life outside of the internet. The use of Facebook does have risks to our life, and these can be revealed by looking at how Facebook is rapidly growing, how it becomes time consuming, its addictiveness, and the privacy issues that are present for most users on the site. With these subjects at hand, it can be undoubtedly acknowledged that Facebook is increasingly taking over a large part of our daily life and comes with substantial risks for using the service. On the contrary, Facebook can be beneficial to use, because members are able to find and re-connect with lost family or friends. The rapid growth in the Facebook social network suggests that it is really likeable to the common internet user and is becoming more popular amongst other major websites such as; Google, eBay, and The New York Times. Stone (2009) reported that Facebook has grown from 100 million members in August of 2008 to 350 million in December 2009 and continues to grow at a rate of 5 million new members a week; this rapid growth over one year is very significant for an online website. (p. 1). Nielsen Company, a market research firm, indicated in October 2009 that 54.7 percent of people ages 12 to 17 in the United States have an active Facebook membership, up from 28.3 percent in October 2008 (p. 2).
