Social Media With the rapid growth of social media in recent years, it’s no surprise that millions of people are affected by its existence. Social media does provide many benefits. On the downside, it offers an escape from reality which negatively impacts individuals. Relationships between people are also influenced big time, both negatively and positively. Social media can be useful in many ways. For example, information is spread a lot faster than any other media. A wider variety of friends, from all over the world can easily be gained. Positive interactions can help build self-confidence. Dating sites such as eHarmony make dating a lot easier. Years ago, couples would pour out their emotions on love letters, phone calls, and in person. Today, the meaning of communication has completely changed. It has become much easier to sustain a relationship through social media and the constant interaction that it provides. In contrast, social media can also prove to destroy relationships. Some people may get so caught up in virtual relationships that they have little to no regard for actual relationships. They may become so used to communicating via internet that they lose basic communication skills and can’t hold a face to face conversation. Prior to social media, people were able to have secret affairs. But now, it has become so much easier to trace foot prints that are left behind, which in turn makes it easier for couples to spy on each other. Sharing passwords, setting rules as to who your significant other can and can’t have on their friends list, or even going as far as making them delete social media all together will cause many problems between insecure couples.
