A sociopath does not feel emotion towards others, and only looks out for the good of himself, which perfectly exemplifies the protagonist in this novel. The word sociopath describes a person who has little to no emotions towards people and other living things beside themselves. People may think that all sociopaths are psychotic serial killers, but that is not the case. There are many ordinary citizens who suffer from the psychological disorder. Symptoms of a sociopath are pathological lying, lack of remorse, incapacity of love, need for stimulation, lack of empathy, juvenile delinquency, unreliability, criminal or entrepreneurial versatility, and shallow emotions.
For those of you who don’t really know what self-harm is, it is very broadly defined as the deliberate attempt to physically injure yourself without causing death. Self-injury can take the form of burning, scratching, cutting, biting, scalding, poisoning and ripping hair out. Although very damaging and distressing eating disorders, unsafe sex and alcohol and drug abuse are not officially counted as self-harm. So now that you know what it is, how do you feel about it? For many of you the notion of deliberately cauising pain to yourself and putting yourself in serious danger is baffling.
Studies also show that APD is 70% more prevalent in males than females. Still, whether they are male or female, the effects this disorder can have on one’s life is large and long-reaching. Unfortunately, there aren’t many treatments for this disorder outside of the basics. The most common form of treatment for APD, along with other mental disorders, is years of extensive psychotherapy with a professional therapist that specializes in these types of disorders. In some cases, medication can be prescribed in order to help lessen the intensity of some of the symptoms the individual is experiencing.
(Taylor, Jun/Sep97) Persons with mental health issues are no more likely to commit acts of crime then those who are not mentally ill. However, they do tend to have more arrest records, are in jail or prison, or on parole or probations. Mental illness is three times higher in criminal acts that the general population of non-mental illness victims. This is usually due to the lack of care programs for the mentally ill. People often believe that bullies are individual sadists in society, who seek pleasure from other’s despair. Due to this common misconception, people fail to understand that an average citizen can become a bully based on the circumstantial factors in an atmosphere (Zimbardo, Lucifer). Various psychological experiments have proven that bullying occurs due to the presence of specific social factors in an environment. Anonymity is a primary social factor which promotes bullying, since it creates a lack of empathy in an atmosphere. The ignorance of authority figures is another social factor which causes bullying since it creates an acceptable environment for victimization.
