Reflection of John Stuart Mill Independence Junior College Roselia Chinchilla Abstract John Stuart Mill was born in 1806 and died in 1873. His philosophical thinking is based on liberty in which liberty is the nature and limits of the power which can be legitimately exercised by society over the individual. Power was ultimately regarded as dangerous and it was aimed to set limits to the power which the ruler should be suffered to exercise over the community and the limitation was the liberty. There were political liberties that people need to recognize and if the ruler went beyond his power then specific resistance or a general rebellion was justifiable. There were also constitutional checks by which a body of some sort supposed to represent its interest which was a necessary condition for governing power. Men wanted governors be an independent power and magistrates be tenants to have complete security so power of governments not be abused. The then looks at what one auto seek for protection and that when someone follow a religious doctrine it does not make a person morally sound because an individual must strike a balance between religion, faith and their own personal morality. He continues saying that a person can do what he pleases and face his own consequences once he is not injuring the rights of others. People should always have business with each other to always promote the good of them no matter what. When they promote the good they should do it by persuasion and not by scourges. A person should choose the society more acceptable to him and be accountable for their own actions. Reflection John Stuart Mill has very influential points on liberty. He educates the minds of people to make them know what they can do, cannot do and where the government power cannot exceed over them.
