But for many employees around the world, they are becoming a sad paralleled reality because of social networking. More than half of our adult population is employed. And with currently 1.2 billion registered users on Facebook, I’m willing to bet that this affects at least one person in this room. Thirty-seven percent of companies report using social networks to research potential job candidates, according to a new CareerBuilder Survey. So what are hiring managers looking for on social media?
Many college students are posting inappropriate pictures and posting comments about substance abuse that violate student-conduct policies or local laws. Students these days are now being charged with code violations because of their Facebook postings. Online communities and texting also is being used as a form of cheating in the classroom. He thinks the students should be taught interpersonal intelligence and learn when, where, and what kind of internet usage is appropriate.
The article takes a sudden turn to reveal a darker side to the Facebook fad. Originally Zuckerberg agreed to help three upperclassmen create a social networking site but was later sued by them for stealing their idea when Zuckerberg made Facebook on his own. The author uses a great deal of formal diction and legal jargon, which can intimidate the reader. Vargas even describes one of the upperclassmen suing Zuckerberg as “Tall, wide shouldered, and gregarious,” creating a mental image that would daunt anyone. The media is not always completely truthful about information it publishes, especially on touchy subjects which the general public just eats up. Within this article both language and structural features have been used in order to convince the audience that teenagers who party are all uncontrollable. Higgins’ article from November 12th 2012 shows bias towards all teenagers, especially those who attend parties. The language features used throughout the article ‘Party crawl turns ugly’ is bias and portrays teens in a negative form.

He cites a study on internet use by two psychologists from Carnegie Mellon University, as well as an early independent study done by Psychologist Kimberly Young on the effects of internet addiction to support his assertions. In both studies, the internet was shown to increase rates of depression among users, in direct tandem with frequency of use. Also, loneliness increased as the internet was shown to reduce the number of contacts in frequent users’ real-life social circles. By “real-life social circle”, I mean what Stoll defines as Deep Social Ties.
