Emperical research brought out that there are differences between learning styles of young and adults. Adult educators coined the term andragogy for the growing body of knowledge about adult learners that would enable them to talk about it in parallel with the pedagogy model. It is derived from the Greek word meaning ‘adult’. The andragogy model proposes that: 1. Adults learn best when they are free to determine what, how and when they should learn. 2. Adults were internally motivated and highly self-directed learners. 3. Adults learn more from non-formal, unorganized and loosely structured programme because there is scope to apply grey cells and pick up what is important by structuring it in the fashion easiest to them. 4. Adults have a need to know why they should learn something. 5. Adults have a very sharp sense of understanding what is their benefit in learning and loss in not learning. ANDRAGOGY PEDAGOGY THE LEARNER • The learner is self-directed and responsible for his/her own learning. • Self-evaluation is the characteristic of this approach. • The learner is dependent on the teacher/instructor for all the learning. • The teacher/instructor assumes full responsibility for what is taught and how it is learned. • The teacher/instructor evaluates the learning. ANDRAGOGY PEDAGOGY ROLE OF THE LEARNERS EXPERIENCE • The learner brings a greater volume and quality of experience. • Different experiences assure diversity in groups and are the source of self-identity, thereby enabling learning by sharing. • The learner comes with little or no experience. • The experience of the instructor is the most influential. READINESS TO LEARN • Any change is likely to trigger a readiness to learn. • The need to know in order to perform more effectively in some aspect of one’s life is important. • Ability to assess gaps between where one is now and where one
