What makes a product/service a purple cow? A product or service that would be considered a purple cow is one that is set apart from all others and different from the rest. The term “remarkable” seems to be the best way to describe a purple cow as it implies that there is something different or noteworthy or the product or service contains a trait that makes it more desirable than other products. Because this product is unique or remarkable, it tends to not need an extensive marketing campaign or budget. Rather, the product tends to speak for itself and word of mouth seems to be a significant catalyst by which the product gains popularity. What are the current purple cows for Americans? For Americans the purple cows over the last few years have been the most popular / best-selling items. Apple seems to be the company whose products are most anticipated and purchased. The Toyota Prius comes to mind as being one of the best-selling cars of recent years. Amazon has risen to the top of internet-based retailers / electronic commerce. Facebook and Twitter lead the pack when it comes to social networking. What are your personal “purple cows”? What makes each "remarkable for you"? How many people have you told about these products and services? I guess that the best example of a personal purple cow would be a restaurant that my wife and I frequent. Many years ago a friend had recommended we give this restaurant a try. We had driven past this restaurant many times but never gave it much thought. From the outside, it didn’t look like anything special and we had never seen any significant advertising to draw us in. Based on the recommendation, we gave it a try and it soon became our favorite restaurant, we frequent it often and have recommended it to many, many people.
