Some police departments, such as New York, implemented the zero tolerance style and claimed that it lowered their crime rates in the mid 1990’s. The police became more arrest-oriented and focused on a more aggressive approach to crime control. They would increase their traffic citations, arrests, and increase their contacts with citizens. However, one of the issues with the zero tolerance style of policing is that it can cause some undue harm to citizens. By being too aggressive, it leads officers to become more suspicious of some people even though they may not deserve it, and can to lead to false arrests or abuse.
We need officers to step up and do a better job of stopping these crimes because it’s tearing our city apart. Officers do a great job of being there to give out parking tickets but very seldom are around when homicide crimes are in action. If we increase the number of officers in the city we would be able to scatter around the city more and be able to react to action quicker. The city could get a federal grant to hire more officers and the Detroit citizens need more jobs available so
(2) Police can become more responsive to the citizens they protect and serve. Crime rates would be reduced. (3) Local municipalities could incur cost savings by reducing the number of police officers on staff. (4) Local communities and neighborhoods less served by police could begin to receive better support (i.e. greater response times, stronger police presence through more frequent drive-through and armed foot patrols in neighborhoods, etc.).
CAPS unite police, the community, and other city agencies together to identify and solve neighborhood crime problems, rather than simply react to their symptoms after the fact (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy, 2010). CAPS use a variety of problem-solving strategies and new technology to help police and residents target and fight crime (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy, 2010). Chicago Police Officers continue to enforce the law and respond rapidly to serious crimes and life-threatening emergencies. CAPS recognize that the police alone cannot solve the city's crime problems alone. CAPS recognizes it takes a combined effort of police, community, and city government working cohesively in identifying and solving neighborhood crime problems in the City of Chicago (Chicago Alternative Policing Strategy,
While the increase in homicide rate from 2010 to 2011 may seem small there are certainly many schemes that the Philadelphia Police Department should be looking into in order to ensure that no further increase occurs. Problem oriented policing is an effective way to handle and prevent specific problems such as homicide and it is clear that other cities like Boston, Jersey City, Kansas City and Jacksonville have been met with success when they have implanted such schemes. For Philadelphia’s specific problem of gun crime specialized patrol could prove valuable and effective in reducing homicide rate as homicide is so closely tied to firearm availability and use. However, I do not think that one scheme in isolation will be the most effective plan in long term reduction which is why hot spot policing would add further success to a problem oriented policing scheme for Philadelphia. Specialized patrols for guns and hot spot policing are only two suggestions of how to implement problem oriented policing and tackle the homicide rate but the true advantage of implementing problem oriented policing is that it can and should be reviewed periodically and changed based on where the city’s major problems lie.
It should inform your readers of your issue and state what you think should happen. Avoid saying “I think,” “I am going to tell you about,” “The issue I have chosen is,” or anything else that refers to yourself or announces your issue. SAMPLE THESIS: Building more homes on the only remaining land in our already crowded city is not a solution to the housing crisis; instead we should look at alternate sites, like the many abandoned commercial properties in our city, to build more housing. People today are crazier than they used to be. Because of this us American’s are carrying our guns with us more so we can feel safer.
It is important that violence and gun crime are talked about in films and that young people are made to see the real side of it, because people are getting killed often in events where youths are carrying guns, this often appears on the news. Statistics show that gun crime has been on the rise in recent years especially in inner city areas like the one shown in the film. The two main characters of the film are Ricky and Wisdom who can not break out the never ending circle of gun crime but both for different reasons. Ricky tries to leave but he fails because he feels that he owes Wisdom for saving his life and
Sir Robert Peel believed that crime prevention could be achieved without infringing on the lives of the public. A key concept that peel believed is the people are the police and the police are the people. Mr. Peel introduced twelve principals of his theory of policing, which are as important now as they were in the 1800s. Sir Robert Peel also changed the way the citizens viewed police by requiring them to wear uniforms, and badges with identification numbers on them to make the police easily to identify. Mr. Peel’s metropolitan police force was nick named the “bobbies” after him.
So, while politicians talk about the “desperate prison crisis”, we should think about where the actual desperation really lies. The problem is that we need to stop incarcerating vast amounts of non-violent offenders for 25 years to life. Non-violent criminals with minor offenses should not be dictated under the three-strike law. Even with this simple change in the three-strike law, our society would save more money funding other alternatives such as prime prevention strategies. These strategies include programs designed to reduce repeat victimization in domestic burglary, theft, and any other violence.
Cell phone use increases the likelihood of motor vehicle accidents The use of a cell phone while driving increases the likelihood of having an automobile accident and as such the use of cell phones in vehicles should be restricted and irresponsible drivers should be prosecuted under the letter of the law for reckless driving. Cell phones have become a commodity in our everyday lives. Some people however are taking the trend to extremes by engaging in conversations while operating a moving vehicle. This widespread phenomenon has increased the rate of motor vehicle accidents throughout the state. It is believed that actively using a cell phone while driving increases the likelihood of an accident by as much as four times the rate as those who do not use a cell phone.
