Assessment HSC 024 Lorena Anghel 22/01/15 Principles of safeguarding and protection in health and social care 1.1. Define the following types of abuse: Abuse can be both deliberate and accidental. Physical abuse is: the non-accidental infliction of physical force that results in bodily injury, pain or impairment. * Examples of physical abuse: -Hitting, biting, slapping, - Inappropriate restraining or sanctions, -Force feeding, deprivation of food or clothing, -Misuse of medication Sexual abuse is: direct or indirect involvement into sexual activity without valid consent or by being pressured into Consent may not be given because: The client has capacity and does not want to give it, the client lacks capacity and is therefore unable to give it, or the client feels pushed into activity because the other person is in a position of power, authority or trust * Examples of sexual abuse: -Rape or attempted rape, -Sexual assault and harassment, -Non-contact abuse e.g. voyeurism, indecent exposure Emotional and psychological abuse is: threat, swearing, humiliation, bullying or any other form of mental cruelty which results in mental or physical distress, denial of choice, of self-expression , of privacy and dignity * Examples of emotional and psychological abuse: -Emotional abuse, -Verbal abuse, -Humiliation and ridicule, -Discrimination -Threats with punishments - Intimidation or exclusion, Blaming, -Denial of religious or cultural needs. Financial abuse: the unauthorised and improper use of funds, property or goods belonging to a client * Examples of financial abuse: -Misuse or theft of money, benefits and or property, -Fraud and extortion, -Not allowing access to money, -Forcing changes to a will or testament.
