DeVry University Week 6 Case Study * According to Maslow's hierarchy, which basic needs did Shank's old boss fail to meet? Explain why the needs have not been met. What could be done to meet these missing needs? (20 points) First, what is the Maslow's hierarchy of needs? According to our text book, on page 451, the Maslow’s hierarchy of needs suggests that people must satisfy five groups of needs in order—physiological, security, belongingness, esteem, and self-actualization (Griffin, 2013, p. 451). These hierarchy of needs assume that people have different needs that can be arranged in a hierarchy of importance. To elaborate, people are motivated to accomplish these needs in order of its importance. Once an individual has stabilized their physiological need which is met by working and earning a paycheck to feed and shelter them, they are motivated to move up in the hierarchy of needs. If one level is not satisfied, a person tends to lack motivation to progress to a higher hierarchy of need. Shank is an employee of a retail store Flight 001, which sells traveling equipment such as baggage. In an interview with Shank she was asked what she likes most of her job at Flight 001, to which she stated the attention and care provided by her boss made her feel as if she was a part of a family or team. Shank went on to mention that when she witnesses her boss’s involvement with the store she feels how important the business is to him, he is willing to take ideas and feedback she hears from the customers. Shank stated that when she observes her boss’s behavior it motivates her in a sense that her position in the store makes a difference and does matter.
