How well developed organizational policies and procedures guide the use of police employee discretion to ensure the philosophy of the department is met.
An integral component to the infrastructure of government is law enforcement. In recent years, police actions, particularly police abuse has come into view of a wide, public and critical eye. While citizens worry about protecting themselves from criminals, it has now been shown that they must also keep a watchful eye on those who are supposed to protect and serve. This paper will discuss the types of police abuse prevalent today, including the use of firearms and recovery of private information. I will also discuss what and how citizens’ rights are taken advantage of by the police.
The Criminal Justice System Author Earle Lewis CRJ 100, Professor Douglas 10 Jan 2013 Introduction The Criminal Justice System is defined as “a collection of laws and institutions designed to enforce minimal laws according to a defined set of rules and procedures”. (Schmalleger, 2011, pp16). There are three main components to our present day criminal justice system. Firstly, there are the Police. It is their duties to ensure public safety and maintain order.
While verbal communication can be prepared and even practiced, non verbal communication is usually involuntary. Non verbal communication, also known as, body language can be very telling of what the speaker actually means to say, or how the speaker feels about what is being said no matter how hard it is tried to be concealed. Public speaking is an inevitable duty of those working in the criminal justice field. When some crimes are committed, the media can latch on to the story and not let go. The media has been known to work side by side in helping the police departments, but it has also been known to work against those in law enforcement.
Police Ethics and Deviance According to Wadsworth An Introduction to Policing (2005), “ethics can be defined as the practical, normative study of the rightness and wrongness of human conduct.” What this means is that everyone is taught the difference between what is accepted as right and wrong. The nature of ethics is for each individual to be able to look at a situation and make a sound judgment according to what is right and wrong. A police official must pay particular attention to ethics. They must make sure their personal lives, prejudices, political views, goals, personal hostilities or friendships to influence their decisions (White, 2004). Some of the standards police have to follow concerning ethics in their work routine are things like: Officers must enforce the law without compromise for the crime they are preventing and with carrying out the prosecution of criminals.
Police force protects our rights as citizens, enforces the law, and it helps shape a society to make moral and ethical decisions. However, one may argue that the use of police force can be too extreme and that it strips citizens of their rights. This issue leads to an important question, should we expand or reduce the use of police force? According to a news article, “The police can be described as a constituted body of persons that are empowered by the state to enforce the law, limit civil disorder, and protect property” (news.linktv.org). Law enforcement constitutes the part of the policing activity itself.
Responsibilities of different uniformed public services In this assignment I will be looking at the main responsibilities of two public services the police and the army. I will also be looking at the performance indicators and what they do on a daily basis. Police The responsibilities of a police officer are often extremely broad. Although their main responsibilities are usually keeping the peace, enforcing the law, protecting the public and property, and the prevention and detection of crimes, officers are usually expected to be able to respond in some fashion to a wide variety of situations that may arise while they are on duty. The actual purpose of the police in theory is to deter crime before it happens.
The police are occasionally called upon to force unpopular laws while attempting to foster or maintain public support (Wrobleski & Hess, 2006).” How the police balance these concerns often determines the quality of the relationship that they have with the public. The actions of individual police officers (the use of excessive force), or policies enacted by a department that emphasize the coercive legal authority of the police (zero tolerance policing) may jeopardize public satisfaction. In addition, “the quality of police and community relations often contributes to the ability of the police to accomplish goals of public safety (Wrobleski & Hess, 2006).” When the public is satisfied with and has confidence in the police, they are more likely to contribute information that may assist the police in solving crimes. When community residents trust the police, they are more willing to work collaboratively with the police to make improvements to neighborhoods. Therefore, there are very real and
Law enforcement officers need to uphold the law in order to enforce it, so police officers must have a strong sense of right and wrong and they must generally exhibit and encourage good behavior to the public. This sense of right and wrong and the desire to do good in the community is perhaps the most important trait a police officer needs to have. Police officers often find themselves in high-stress, volatile situations. At the other end of the spectrum, they deal with a lot of mundane, routine patrols. They deal with dishonest and dangerous people, and also victimized and abused people.
Police departments’ effectiveness depends on its organization. Local police are assigned to areas, also known as beats, with the responsibility of maintaining order, ensuring that the law is upheld, and providing needed assistance to citizens. If communities are going to be safe to live in, then the police department must be well organized. As we continue to experience an increase in crime, police organization becomes more and more important, as it determines the police department’s effectiveness. One of the advantages of patrolling is that it gives potential criminals the fear of being caught in the act and citizens the peace of knowing that they are being protected against crime.
